2026 Tree of Lights - November 1st - December 4th
Hospice East Bay is proud to be celebrating our 40th annual Tree of Lights! For 40 years, these ceremonies have provided a way for families and friends to honor their loved ones and find solace in the symbolism of light as the names of their loved ones are read. The funds raised by these ceremonies make it possible for us to provide hospice care to patients who are not covered by insurance. Lafayette Historical Society
A Farmer's Journey
How did a farmer who endured a six-month wagon train journey from Missouri end up founding the town of Lafayette?
The Lafayette Historical Society's newest display at the Lafayette Library, beautifully designed by Laura Torkelson, tells the remarkable second chapter of Elam Brown's story.
After arriving in California in 1846, Elam was hired to whip-saw redwoods in Moraga, where he first caught sight of the valley that would one day become Lafayette.
Although California was still part of Mexico when he began his journey and Americans could not legally purchase land, a unique opportunity eventually allowed Elam to acquire the Rancho Acalanes Land Grant.
Most settlers would have simply started a farm. Elam Brown dreamed bigger. He envisioned not only a prosperous ranch, but a community—and from that vision, Lafayette was born.
The exhibit is now on display at the Lafayette Library. We hope you'll stop by and discover another fascinating chapter in Lafayette's story.
