Director's Letter

Greetings!

It is nearing the end of Summer here in Southern California . . . and probably where you are, as well. That means it's time for children - and some adults - to return to school.

So this is a good time to consider your own needs for more biotherapy education, as well as your role in educating others. As you will see from the conference schedule below, we will be teaching the maggot debridement therapy course at Wild on Wounds again this year: September 12 in Las Vegas. We are also planning to offer our own courses again: hands-on workshops in California as well as webinars. If you have any desire for us to put together a lecture, workshop, or other educational program in biotherapy, let us know so that we can get working on it straight away.

If you would like to list your speaking or teaching services on our website, let us know. We are frequently asked to recommend speakers for conferences and lectures; perhaps your name could be there!

Indeed, the BTER Foundation website itself is o ne of our most important educational vehicles. In order to make the site more user-friendly (and in order to remove the expired information that has accumulated over the past decade), we have been re-designing the site and updating the contents. The basic structure should be completed by September 1st. After that, we will be live as we continue cleaning and trimming, nipping and tucking, repairing broken links, etc. You can join in the fun (if you like treasure-hunting) by notifying us of any problems you discover after that date. We like hearing of problems we don't already know about, because it gives us another opportunity to improve. But since we already know about a lot of opportunities, I had better end here and get back to work . . . .

With Best Wishes, Always,
R Sherman (signature)

BIOTHERAPY SQUARED!
MDT USED TO HEAL HORSE'S HOOF
SHANNON THOMPSON, FOUNDER OF BRAVE MEADOWS HIPPOTHERAPY, RECENTLY USED MDT TO TREAT HER HORSE'S HOOF!

In an extensive, exclusive interview with BTER Foundation, Shannon shared the success story of using maggot therapy on one of Brave Meadow's Therapy Horses: "Recently, we had one of our therapy horses step on a nail. We had to take 'Doc' to the University of Georgia Veterinary School to be treated. Doc had to have a small part of his coffin bone removed due to infection from the nail. The veterinarian recommended maggot therapy to eat the bad tissue and improve the healthy tissue in Doc’s hoof. They started with 1027 maggots and after nearly a week of letting the maggots do their job, Doc’s hoof had improved significantly. Doc was sent home with a couple of maggots still in his hoof. The veterinarians were very impressed and highly recommend using maggots to aid in healing. Doc has several special needs riders awaiting his recovery so they can prepare for Special Olympics. Thanks to the maggot therapy, his recovery should be sooner due to the larvae. "
