Ride, Walk, Reflect: Experience the 9/11 Trail this Fall
As temperatures drop and vibrant fall colors paint the landscape, there's no better time to reflect on the resilience and unity that emerged in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, along the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. This season, the Alliance invites everyone to embark on three meaningful journeys that blend reflection, adventure, and community. Whether you're cycling through the serene Laurel Highlands, walking in the heart of Northern Virginia, or embarking on an epic ride through historic Gettysburg, each event offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past and contribute to the future of this remarkable trail.
Kick off September with the sixth annual Tour de Trail: Flight 93 National Memorial ride on September 7, set against the stunning backdrop of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. This 24-mile ride, starting in Berlin, PA, takes cyclists through a loop that includes the sacred grounds of the Flight 93 National Memorial. The ride offers a chance to enjoy the crisp autumn air and scenic views while reflecting on the courage and sacrifice of the heroes aboard Flight 93. Participants will be greeted at the memorial by an interpretive ranger from the National Park Service, who will share "The Story of Flight 93," providing deeper insight into the events of that fateful day. All proceeds from this event support the ongoing creation and maintenance of the 1,500-mile, multi-use 9/11 National Memorial Trail.
For those who prefer to explore on foot, the second annual Tour de Trail: Pentagon Memorial event on October 5 offers a powerful three-mile walk through the heart of Northern Virginia, featuring a stop at the Pentagon National Memorial. This walk is more than just a stroll; it's an opportunity to engage with history as participants will hear from speakers who bring personal perspectives on the events of 9/11. Among them are Congressman Don Beyer, a co-sponsor of the Trail’s legislation, Retired U.S. Army Colonel Robert Dannemiller, who was inside the Pentagon on 9/11, and Advisory Board Member and retired pilot Thomas Heidenberger, whose wife, Michelle, was a flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 77. Start your day with breakfast at the Water Park, and after the walk, enjoy the local vendors. Children under 13 can participate for free, making this a meaningful experience for families to educate the next generation.
Those interested in an adventure that spans multiple days and covers significant ground should join the Alliance for the inaugural Gettysburg Loop Tour from October 23-29. This six-day, 200-mile cycling journey through south-central Pennsylvania offers an unparalleled way to experience the history and landscapes that define the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. Beginning and ending in Harrisburg, PA, the tour includes a two-day stay in Gettysburg, where participants can choose from various routes that showcase the iconic Gettysburg Battlefield and other local attractions. This ride is a test of endurance and a journey through some of the nation's most historic and reflective landscapes.
Each of these events offers a unique way to connect with the memory of September 11, 2001, while supporting the vital work of the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance. Whether you participate in one or all of them, your involvement helps ensure that the legacy of resilience, unity, and remembrance continues to be honored along this extraordinary trail. Lace up your shoes, hop on your bike, and make this fall one to remember.
