Breathitt County recently received $1.3 million worth of relief funds as one of the counties hit hardest by the July 2022 flooding.

$750,000 will be used to renovate the Breathitt County courthouse, including updating the building and sidewalks to meet ADA compliance.

Part of the award will be put toward resurfacing Miller Branch Barwick Road. Poor road conditions have made it unsafe for school buses and emergency vehicles.

Other projects include renovations to an apartment complex and city playground.

This course is for local governments only. Please note that participants must have a vehicle for the hands-on portion. Maximum of two people per vehicle.

Roadway departure crashes account for approximately 51% of crash-related fatalities. Across the state, 20% of all crashes take place on a curve and 40% of the fatal crashes occur while driving on a curve. Horizontal Curve Alignment focuses on the aspects of assessing curve advisory speeds and the use of proper curve signing. This course will train individuals to record data taken from the assessment of curves, use horizontal alignment technology, and install proper signage, including curve advisory speed. Participants will be given a basic introduction on using crash data to determine which curves are at a higher risk for crashes.

Promote Slow Down and Move Over

at Your Agency

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is joining the Kentucky State Police (KSP) and AAA to promote the “Slow Down and Move Over” message through Aug. 15. Promote and share Kentucky's move over law.

Unfortunately, first responders are killed every year by drivers who fail to move over. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, 149 law enforcement officers – just one category of first responders – have been killed in traffic-related incidents since 2017.

Kentucky passed its Move Over law in 2003 requiring motorists to move over to the adjacent lane when approaching an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle with flashing lights. If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, motorists must slow down and use caution. Failure to do so can result in fines, jail time or both.

Combined Behavioral and Engineering Approach to Preventing Highway Fatalities

This report proposes and demonstrates methods for unpacking the influence of behavioral-related factors on crash occurrences and outcomes. The primary focus is on behaviors targeted in the Strategic Highway Safety Plan — aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving, and driving without proper restraint (i.e., seatbelts). Based on application of these methods, the report highlights areas and highway corridors in Kentucky where behavioral-related crashes have been most common.
