NCC digitization project on target for October beta test
In the few months since the awarding of Richard King Mellon Foundation funding to digitize the New Century Careers curriculum to accommodate and empower new generations of trainees, significant progress has been made toward the use of a mobile web application to augment NCC’s pre-apprenticeship and credentialing training.
“Our goal is to better prepare students to adapt to the technology of the advanced manufacturing workplace,” said Neil Ashbaugh, NCC president and CEO.
Collaborating with NCC on the project are Rewyndr, a Pittsburgh-based software company that provides an innovative mobile web application for interactive visual work instruction and remote training for workers performing physical work, and Pittsburgh’s World-Class Industrial Network (WIN), a project development and management consulting firm with interdisciplinary experts. “The WIN Digital Solutions team enables clients to tackle problems and seize opportunities beyond traditional solutions. We’ve collaborated with Rewyndr for several years. Implementing their tool is a new way we can help our clients develop innovative solutions,” said John Werling, WIN partner.
The project focus is to build consistent visual procedural content for the Manufacturing 2000 (M2K) curriculum to be engaged through the Rewyndr application on tablets so that trainees can reference instructor and industry knowledge as they complete their assignments.

NCC interviews Catalyst Connection on manufacturing
"Have the drive to better yourself, to seek out those opportunities for further growth"
New Century Careers spent time with Nate Broadus and In`dea Carter, two of Catalysts Connection’s workforce specialists, when they visited to conduct a focus group with one of the Manufacturing 2000 cohorts to get their perspective on training and careers in manufacturing.
Broadus has worked with Catalyst Connection for 2 ½ years, working with job seekers and community groups to create new pathways to manufacturing careers.
Carter, who has been with Catalyst Connection since January, also works with job seekers to obtain positions in manufacturing. She does, however, have more of a focus in technology, helping to create programs in cybersecurity and robotics.
“[Manufacturing] is continuing to grow and it’s super diverse,” said Broadus. “There's so much you can do in machining. It's a career where you can continue to grow until you retire and it’s a great option compared to a four-year traditional college experience.”
“I always ask people 'What do you do for a hobby?' A lot of times with what they do as hobbies, there’s something in manufacturing that will transfer over,” said Carter. “If you play video games, then maybe you’re a good candidate for a robotics program and you can do something in coding or virtual reality. Even if you like wick making, that’s still manufacturing."
Broadus and Carter advise those interested in getting into the manufacturing field to start learning what’s out there that aligns with their interests and to be willing to invest some time in yourself to pick up new skills.
