Alexander Allen Memorial Organ
Austin Organ Company, James B. Jamison, Opus 1862
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oakland
Designed by James B. Jamison of Austin Organs, Opus 1862 is one of the West Coast’s best examples of the American Classic organ. Jamison’s design reflected the “English cathedral style,” becoming popular among American organ builders of the day. As originally designed, Opus 1862 had every tonal resource needed to deftly accompany the Anglican service and render more expansive organ repertoire effectively. Jamison wrote,
“…St. Paul’s Church affords an unusually favorable opportunity for creating the characteristic majesty and beauty of the cathedral organ and capturing the typical “cathedral effect.” So much of the success of the organ depends on the church in which it sounds and St. Paul’s both in its excellent acoustics and dignified churchly atmosphere, provides an ideal setting for the best the organ builder can design and construct.”
We are in the exploratory phase of an organ restoration project to return our instrument to its original condition, with modern upgrades.
