CRC Volunteers Provide Bright Moments
|
|
Dear CRC Volunteer,
There is a running route I take near my home that I swear is uphill both ways. I know that would defy the laws of physics (or topography?) but I still think it might be true. It starts off uphill for quite some time, and then when I am on my way home, right when I really could use a breather, it is uphill again. In some ways, August feels that way for me this year. 2020 and the first part of 2021 felt like an uphill climb, filled with uncertainty, turmoil and conflict. And now that we are all ready for some positive news, the world seems bleak once again.
I am an empath by nature and the pain I see around me and in the world, sinks down deep. Because of that, it is important for me to look for the bright moments that bring hope, encouragement and refreshment. My job just happens to be one of those bright moments in my life. I met with a group of 8th grade girls last week to discuss the complexities of homelessness (not a light subject matter!). As we talked about the small, practical things we can all do for an issue that can feel hopeless, I watched the girls grow in empathy and understanding. They committed to humanizing those experiencing homelessness and to collect food for our Food Pantry. It was a bright moment.
The hundreds of you who support CRC with your time and compassion provide a bright moment. You are each unique and you bring different gifts, different availabilities, and different backgrounds which makes our team even richer. This week I hope you can be encouraged by the good being done in the community, through you and others, in the midst of the real challenges. Thank you!
Warmly,
Sara Rosenbaum,
CRC Volunteer Manager

A reminder to all volunteers of our current mask policy and vaccination certification:
Below is a simple way to remember the OSHA (and therefore CRC’s) guidelines for staff and volunteers. *Even if vaccinated, you may feel more comfortable wearing a mask at this time which is always an option!
|
|
All active volunteers must sign a vaccine certification form, sent out in the middle of July. If you have questions, please direct them to your staff supervisor, your volunteer lead, or the Volunteer Manager.
**Please note that the policies and directives from the San Diego Department of Health can change at any time. CRC will communicate changes as soon as possible. When in doubt, please ask your staff supervisor when you arrive for your shift what the current policy is. Thank you for your patience and support!

Volunteer Rylee Boyles Girl Scout Gold Project
On July 22, Girl Scout Rylee Boyles communicated with Community Resource Center her desire to partner with us to pursue a multi-faceted project to earn her Gold Award. Rylee plans to spread awareness about fast fashion by promoting donating old clothing to thrift stores and resale stores to help stop clothing from ending up in landfills, reducing a carbon footprint, and stopping the support of large corporations with over-worked factory workers.
This falls in line with CRC’s organizational goal of being a “zero waste” operation as well as promoting the sales of our items and an increase in donations. 15% of the proceeds from sales at our stores support our programs to end hunger, domestic violence and homelessness in our community.
Rylee is a current volunteer with the CRC Resale Stores and is a hard worker and a pleasure to have on our team. We look forward to supporting her endeavor in whatever way she needs!

Rylee writes: I have been volunteering at my local CRC Resale Store in San Marcos for the past 6 Months and I have made some of the best memories in my high school career with some of the most amazing people Ms. Mary and Ms. Diane. I always look forward to seeing them and getting the chance to sing, sort, hang and tag the donated clothing. I have enjoyed every second of it and wanted to connect my Gold Award project to help support and promote the CRC cause. Volunteering has introduced me to the amount of work that goes into maintaining a resale store and the potential that second-hand clothing has for those in my community and globally. I wanted to help my community to become more familiar with the idea of donating clothing instead of trashing it. I continue to educate myself and influence others through My Gold Award to volunteer, donate, and support a local CRC to help the cycle of giving clothing a new life continue!

Rotarians Provide Elbow Grease
A hardworking crew from the Encinitas Rotary and the Encinitas Coastal Rotary stepped up on August 20th to clear rooms in our non-disclosed Domestic Violence shelter, Carol’s House. The empty rooms received fresh flooring (donated by JW Flooring) on Saturday, and then another crew came back on Sunday to re-assemble furniture and prepare the rooms for our participants once again. Thank you to both organizations who have provided a long-time partnership with CRC and support to those we serve!
