Dear Maquoketa Valley Families and Community Members,

As summer winds down, I'm filled with excitement and anticipation for the start of the new school year! On behalf of the entire Maquoketa Valley CSD team, I extend a heartfelt welcome back to all our students, families, and dedicated staff.

Summer offered a wonderful opportunity for rest and rejuvenation, but it also saw our teams hard at work preparing for another year of exceptional learning. From facility enhancements to curriculum refinements and professional development for our educators, we've been focused on creating an even more enriching and supportive environment for every child.

This summer we have completed several projects in the District. We have replaced the flooring in the Delhi Elementary / Middle School commons and athletic hallways. We have completed phase 2 of the new playground equipment at Johnston. We completed year 2 of replacing the brick on the Johnston building. We are adding graphics in several areas throughout the Delhi campus.    

This coming school year, there are numerous changes due to new bills passed by the Iowa Legislature. I will also be following up with separate emails to go into more detail on a few of these bills.  Here is a summary of the bills that will have the most impact on our District.  

• HF 2591 - This bill allows 8th graders to compete in High School Athletics and Speech.  
• SF 2428 - Senate File 2428 significantly changes how Iowa schools respond to classroom disruptions, student removals, teacher safety concerns, and behavioral supports. Effective July 1, 2026, school districts must implement procedures that clearly define when students may be removed from classrooms, establish requirements for returning students to classrooms, strengthen teacher involvement in behavioral decisions, and ensure compliance with federal special education law.
• HF 2676 - This bill limits the digital instruction to a maximum of 60 minutes per day for students enrolled in grades K-5. This bill also requires students enrolled in physical education class to complete the Presidential Fitness test. This bill also requires students in grades K-4 to get 40 minutes per day of physical activity, up from 30 minutes per day.  
• SF 274 - This bill requires school districts to accept cash for interscholastic athletic contests or competitions.  
• SF 369 - This bill requires all students to pass a civics test. This is required for graduation. Students can take the test as many times as needed to pass with a 60%. This is effective this school year for our current seniors.  
• HF 2670 - This bill will add a social studies test for the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP). This will not go into effect until the 2027-28 school year. 
• SF 2472 - School Levy Reduction: The base school foundation property tax levy rate is reduced from $5.40 to $4.90 per $1,000 of assessed value. The state offsets this for schools by redirecting a higher portion of state sales tax revenues (SAVE funds) toward property tax relief. This will lower the amount of SAVE funds the district will receive. The district uses SAVE funds to purchase technology, building improvements/repairs, and purchase buses and vehicles.  

We look forward to working together to implement this new legislation. Our schools are the heart of our community, and the partnership between our homes, schools, and the wider community is essential to our success. We look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to foster an environment where all students feel safe, challenged, and inspired to learn.

Dear Maquoketa Valley Parents and Guardians,



As we prepare for another exciting year of Wildcat Activities, we ask that you please take a few minutes to complete your student's registration in Bound if you have not already done so.

Completing your athlete's Bound registration is a very important part of the registration process. It helps ensure that everything is in place before the first day of practice and allows our coaches and Activities Department to prepare for a successful season.

Your registration allows us to:

• Track and verify that physicals and required forms are up to date.
• Maintain accurate team rosters throughout the year.
• Communicate important information, schedule updates, and announcements with athletes and their families.
• Ensure your student is eligible and ready to participate when practices and competitions begin.

By completing your registration as soon as possible, you are helping our coaches and Activities Department prepare for the upcoming school year while making sure your student doesn't miss any important information or opportunities. As a reminder all required forms, including their physical, insurance information, concussion waiver, and any other required documents, must be updated on Bound or on file before they are eligible to begin practice.

Getting this completed now will help ensure a smooth start to the season and prevent any student-athletes from missing valuable practice time.

Participation in activities teaches valuable life lessons such as teamwork, leadership, commitment, perseverance, and pride—qualities that extend far beyond the classroom and playing field.

Maquoketa Valley Community School District

MV students are encouraged to give back to their community through service, and the Wildcat Star Service Award is designed to recognize seniors who have documented at least 300 hours of volunteer work while in high school.

Studies conducted by the Mayo Clinic Health Staff show that students who volunteer their time can benefit in various professional and personal ways that can help them throughout their lives:

Career and Skill Development

• Students can build their resumes by getting hands-on experience.
• Students can explore career paths and discover interests (or dislikes) before committing to a career.
• Students can learn to network and build relationships with adults who can provide references and open doors. 

Health and Well-being

• Volunteering boosts mental health by giving a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
• Helping others can improve physical health by providing opportunities to stay active.
• Service acts also help prevent loneliness by interacting with others and building lasting friendships based on shared values. 

Personal Growth

• Being of service can boost self-esteem by providing a sense of pride and self-worth.
• Helping others in the community can also help expose students to different people and backgrounds.

Check your current lunch account balance: Create your online account through the family meal magic portal, or call/email Morgan Nefzger to get your current lunch account balance. You can make deposits at any time.

Free/Reduced Applications: These forms must be filled out as soon as possible so we have enough time to process your application and correct your registration fees. Free/Reduced applications can be found online, or there are copies in the Delhi Middle School/Elementary Office. These forms can be filled out at any time throughout the school year.

Breakfast Options: Aside from the assigned Breakfast Entree, kids could also choose: Cereal, Yogurt with a muffin, or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Salad Bar: This year, there will be a salad bar offered to 7th-12th grade students and all adult employees Tuesday-Friday. The salad bar will be an alternate meal choice. You will not be able to get the salad bar in addition to the main meal being offered. The salad bar will be located in the High School cafeteria area.

Potato Bar: This year, there will be a potato bar offered to 7th-12th grade students and all adult employees every Monday.

Snack Items: Students in Junior Kindergarten-Fourth Grade have the option of taking a snack item each day. Depending on the week Junior Kindergarten-second grade will have the option of cheese stick, goldfish crackers, single serve honey nut cheerios, nature valley oats and honey granola bar, teddy grahams, or single serve kix Cereal. Third-fourth grade can choose between a granola bar or a cheese stick. Regardless if you qualify for Free/Reduced benefits, you will still be charged the full $0.50 per snack item. Snack items are charged to your account every Friday or Monday for the entire week.

Meal Pricing for the 26/27 school year:

Price Student breakfast: $2.15

Reduced Price Student breakfast: $.030

Earlville & Johnston & Delhi Elementary Student Lunch: $2.85

Middle School & High School Student Lunch $3.10

Reduced Price Student Lunch: $.040

Extra Breakfast Entree: $$2.15

Guest Student Lunch: $3.10

Guest Adult Lunch: $5.14

Charging on negative Accounts: Be sure to watch your lunch account balance. If your family lunch account reaches an amount of Negative $50.00 or more, students will be given an alternate main course meal until the account balance is improved. An alternate meal due to low account balance will still be a full meal however the entree will be a deli sandwich with and no additional seconds or ala carte items. Starting on September 1st invoices will be sent out to families with negative balances and your student(s) will receive a deli sandwich until your account has been replenished. Invoices will be sent out every Tuesday via email.

Alternate main course meal option: This year, we will have an alternate main course substitute at each meal. This substitutes will consist of, a deli sandwich, or a bento box. Students may choose this instead of the main course any given day.

How and where to deposit lunch money: You can always send lunch money with your students to turn in to the secretary at their building, or you can go online and make deposits into your family account. If you send money to the building secretary please put in the memo the amount you would like to be deposited per student.

Text Alert System

Our text alert system is called SchoolMessenger. In order to receive text and email alerts, registration for the 2026-2027 school year must be completed online in PowerSchool. Reminder - only two contacts will receive texts and emails - those with “mother” and “father” relationship status. When entering cell phone numbers, please designate it as a “mobile” phone. An opt in text message will be sent before the first day of school to parents to opt in to receiving these alerts. 

If the information in PowerSchool is not accurate, you will not receive these alerts.
