August 2019 E-NEWS
LEV'S CORNER
June 15th marked one year of the Neighborhood Food Project. I was so impressed when I first learned about this project. As I have seen it in action, it makes me happy, it inspires me, and it sparks hopefulness about the capacity of our community to respond to need. The project is an effort to diversify sources of food coming into ASC's food pantry so that we can increase the amount of food shoppers take home.
Please join me in thanking the 20 Neighborhood Coordinators and 181 ongoing food donors who have donated, delivered, and sorted 15,214 pounds of food and personal care products this year. The food brought in is vital in its quantity (that's 12,678 meals!) and adds variety and choice for our shoppers. The project also increases community awareness of food insecurity locally. ASC's Neighborhood Food Project would not be possible without Lisa Solowiej and Jocelyn Potter, the volunteer organizers of this amazing effort. Please join me in sending our most sincere gratitude to them as well.
The Neighborhood Food Project (NFP) builds community and feeds neighbors through the regular collection of food donations. It is a great way to get volunteers of all ages involved in the Amherst Survival Center.
We have big hopes for the continued growth of this program in the coming year! To continue our expansion,
we need additional Neighborhood Coordinators from Amherst, Belchertown, Ware, Leverette, South Deerfield, South Hadley, Sunderland or Whately.
Neighborhood coordinators recruit a group of 5-15 neighbors to be regular food d
onors, and then every other month (on the third Saturday), they pick up bags of food donations f
rom their neighbors and bring them to the Amherst Survival Center.

DIAPER DRIVE ALL MONTH!
August is Diaper Drive month! You received an email from us last Tuesday (7/30/19) with lots of details. No family should have to choose between clean diapers, rent, food or the electric bill.
Together, we can end local diaper need.
We are thrilled to report that donations are already rolling in.
We've received over 3,500 diapers so far! This year we anticipate distributing well over 80,000 so every donation counts!
JOIN US!
1) Donate diapers! (The most popular sizes are 4, 5 and 6.) Bring them to ASC or to one of the amazing local businesses collecting them for ASC.
2) Make a financial donation toward the purchase of diapers on our
website or send a check (PO Box 9629, North Amherst, MA 01059). Include "diapers" in the note/memo.
Thank you for helping us wipe out diaper need in our community.
