From Culver’s custard and Pete’s Pops to racing sausages, music, bubbles, and games—this year’s Summer Celebration was full of energy, laughter, and community pride.

With nearly 700 attendees and nonstop smiles, it was a joyful reminder of what makes our community so special.

A huge thanks to everyone who made it happen—we couldn’t have done it without you!

Here’s to even more sunshine and good vibes next summer! ☀️

Join Our Team

The Shorewood Public Library is seeking to hire shelvers to fill upcoming vacancies on our team.

This 10 hour per week position is great for high school students: the schedule is flexible and the work is complex but not fast-paced. Shelvers play a vital role at the library by ensuring materials are put back on the shelves in the right spot and by keeping spaces in a neat and orderly fashion.

Library Summer Hours

The library is closed on Sundays in the summer through Labor Day.

We'll be open again on Sundays starting September 7, 2025.

Staff Picks

This month, we're sharing nonfiction books that taught us something valuable or opened our eyes to something unexpected 📖 Check them out at the library!

How the Word is Passed

by Clint Smith

"In this book, Clint goes to numerous sites affiliated with American slavery, among them a horrid sugar cane plantation in Louisiana which has been turned into a memorial educating the public about the wretched slavery there. Also he visits Monticello in Virginia and takes the “house tour” devoted to Thomas Jefferson and also the “slave quarters” tour where he learns about Jefferson’s slave Sally Hemming with whom Jefferson had a very long relationship and several children.

As you might imagine, the book is awesome."

Romaine Wasn’t Built

in a Day: The Delightful History of Food Language

by Judith Tschann

"Did you know the word “cereal” derived from the Roman goddess of agriculture? Or that the mighty “filbert” (a.k.a. the hazelnut) got its name from a seventh-century French abbot whose birthday just happened to coincide with the first ripening of its eponymous shrub? If you find these little food name origin stories fascinating, this new book is worth a check out. It is chock-full of fun little anecdotes and debunkers of all your favorite funny-named foods. Divided into neat sections and eminently browsable, discover the roots of quirky egg dishes, after-dinner drinks, lunch staples and more."

Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman

by Abby Stein

"I listened to Becoming Eve through the Libby app a few months ago. By listening to this book, I learned more about Hasidic Jewish communities through the lens of the expectations and roles of women in this culture. It was fascinating to listen to how Abby had to and continues to challenge those expectations throughout her transgender experience."

Why You Like It: The Science & Culture of Musical Taste

by Nolan Gasser

"It's a thick book, heavy on detail about the science and distinctions of musical genre and why we as individuals like certain kinds of songs. Nolan Gasser essentially created the Music Genome Project at Pandora Radio to catalog all the unique features of songs and artists and automatically create personalized playlists based on user listening preferences. The book is filled with a lot of Music history, science, and theory and Gasser does a great job at keeping it engaging and interesting without ever letting the weight of the content tire you out.

I learned a lot reading it and it really expanded my interests in music I'd never otherwise consider."

Recommended by Ben

Book and Dagger

by Elyse Graham

"Eye opener about how America developed the CIA after we entered WWII."

Devil in the White City

by Erik Larson

"Narrative style writing. If serial killers and architecture are your jam, this is for you! Lots of work creating buildings that were not permanent for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Meanwhile H.H. Holmes builds his killing hotel. Fun fact, the Ferris wheel made its debut at this fair."

Braiding Sweetgrass

by Robin Wall Kimmerer

"A soul opening lesson in botany while getting a warm hug from the author. Appreciated all the indigenous wisdom she imparted about plants."
