Message from the CEO

It’s been an incredibly difficult summer season due to the Wildfire. I want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you who has shown unwavering resilience and dedication during these trying times. The past few months have tested our spirit with the ongoing closures that disrupt commuting, shipping, and freight. And the opportunity to travel for leisure, see loved ones, or much needed medical appointments have been hampered. Hopefully, with the road closures scheduled for Aug 17 & 24th, we are closer to resuming travel with some ease by the end of the month with two-lane travel returning.

As we continue connecting with our membership and hearing about your concerns and challenges, I assure you we are relaying your messages and feedback to decision-makers. In partnership with the Tofino-Long Beach and Ucluelet Chamber of Commences’, we are working together to ensure the long-term economic recovery and resilience of our region.

Moving forward

We are getting back to business here at the Chamber and we look forward to resuming regular Chamber programming for our membership and network. We’ve had incredible membership growth and are excited to connect with our vibrant business community at future events.

Impact Survey Update

Thank you, everyone, for your speedy survey responses – we collected 55 responses in the short period of time. The sample for the Alberni Valley was too small to scale up for an estimate. As a general update, in Tofino, the revenue reportedly lost by businesses during the closure period was an estimated $29.7 million. In Ucluelet, that figure is $14 million, for a west coast total of nearly $44 million in losses.

August 17th and 24th Road Closures

There will be two full day-time closures of the highway starting this week to allow crews to remove approximately a dozen refrigerator-sized boulders as part of the rock-scaling work being done at Angel Rock, which has proved to be the most challenging segment of the bluff.

Rock scaling is a complex and labour-intensive process, requiring work on cliff faces to safely remove dangerous rock material, and can be carried out only in daylight hours and during favourable weather conditions.

Weather permitting, the closures will take place:

  • Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023 – 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023 – 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m
