Rich History

Lewis County, WV

Thomas Jonathan Jackson known throughout the world as Stonewall Jackson grew to manhood in this county and was raised with the heritage and beliefs of its residents. Orphaned at an early age, he was raised by his fraternal family at WVU Jackson's Mill now part of West Virginia University Extension Service 4-H grounds. You can still tour the historic area of the Mill and a stroll the ground this young boy walked.

The Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum sits overlooking our city. The building is the largest hand cut stone building in North America and takes second in the world. The Asylum was started before the Civil War and the building saw two future Presidents camped on the grounds. Take a historic tour of the building.

We were once considered the glass capital of the world but now there is very few glass manufacturers left in WV. Our glass museum & studios provide tours. There daily live glassblowing demonstrations open to the public all types of hand-crafted art glass which is created by the master glassblower on site, from simple glass flowers, friendship balls and hummingbird feeders to large, one of kind pieces of fine art glass! Tour group demonstrations are available upon request. There is ample public and private parking, bus and RV parking available. Come share the experience of glass making and help us keep the tradition alive!!!

Celebrate Irish heritage by visiting us in the spring, stop in Ireland, WV for the Irish Spring Festival. Ireland. It is a wonderful small town festival celebrating their Irish heritage. Experience Irish Road Bowling: only sanctioned in three cities in the United States.

Visit the Weston Colored School built in the early 1880's. It was a one-room school made of local brick which continues to grow and expand. It now houses the Mountaineer Military Museum. The underlying theme of the Mountaineer Military Museum is childhood friends who were drafted into their country's service and only one made it home. A graveside promise was made that "I'll never let anyone forget you guys. The museum features personal and historical items honoring veterans of all wars and a reflection room, a place where all can go and honor those who have fallen before us.

Take a walking tour of historic certified downtown Weston. An architecture example to see is the Citizens Bank Building on Main Street, is not only breathtakingly beautiful it is believed to be the tallest single-story building in the U.S. is made from Indiana limestone in beautiful Art Deco style. which is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also has the tallest one-story room in the United States. While on your tour downtown, stop in one of our fine restaurants for lunch or dinner or shop in one of our fine antique stores.
