The above show documents in the Michener Collection, including typed and hand written family trees for the fictional Steed family, drafts for maps and naval battle plans, and a drawing of the Whisper with Michener's hanko stamp and notes. All of these plans were hand drafted and illustrated by Michener during the planning and writing process.
When writing his acclaimed 1978 novel Chesapeake, author James A. Michener visited the Talbot County Free Library's Maryland Room to perform extensive research into the region, its people, history, and culture. Upon the completion of his book, Michener donated a variety of materials to the library, including all of his papers, drawings and maps associated with the book - even the manuscript of Chesapeake.
Filed away in 18 archival boxes, the Michener Collection is a treasure trove of research, dedication, and passion for the Eastern Shore. Whether you're a Michener fanatic, a fan of Chesapeake, or just love the writing process, this collection holds dear the vision of an author who appreciated our little corner of the world.
The Michener Collection is housed in the Maryland Room at the Easton Branch, and hours of operation vary. To learn more about this collection and others, please visit https://tcfl.org/mdroom/, or click here.
