JPNA TRAFFIC COMMITTEE AT WORK FOR US
Dear Neighbors,
Thanks to everybody who attended the Quarterly Meeting...! The ice cream was great!
The Board voted on the traffic calming elements:
1) Two speed tables on Mountain Ave between Seneca/Waverly and Hampton/Edison were approved. This doesn’t mean they will get installed. It does mean that the traffic committee can proceed with gathering the signatures from neighbors near the speed tables...
2) Three locations west of Mountain were approved for traffic calming devices. The locations are: 1) Santa Rita between Edison and Grant; 2) Santa Rita at Seneca; 3) Seneca near Tyndall. The City had approved a speed hump, a traffic circle, and a speed hump, at those locations, respectively. But we are now asking the City if there are other alternatives such as chicanes that we could use in those locations...
For all devices above, the neighborhood will need to for it. Estimated costs at this point in time are: 1) speed humps - $5-6,000; 2) speed tables - $10-12,000 each; 3) traffic circle - $10K and up (depending on the design); and 4) chicanes - $10K. These are just estimates – we all know that inflation is driving costs up.

The Grant Road Coalition Central Segments is advocating to preserve the "possible green space" and to encourage mitigations from noise and light. The coalition of Jefferson Park, SAMOS, Mtn/First, Campbell/Grant and Catalina Vista will soon be meeting to discuss Phase 5. Concerns from SAMOS:
- vandalism of trees and cactus,
- alley behind park on Northwest corner of Grant and Campbell- drug paraphernalia, and also people who hide in the bushes.
Concerns from Jefferson Park:
- cars being broken into, burglary of homes and cars.
- the need for students to lock their car and house and not to leave IDs in a car. This will be brought up at the next CCRC, Campus Community Relations Committee meeting.
- possibility of a renter’s packet with information on crime in the neighborhood, numbers to call, and trash and recycling information.
Dangerous begging at intersections:

People with signs asking for money who are standing in the median of the street is dangerous for the solicitors and make driving more difficult by being a distraction. Neighbor reports someone coming into the street and knocking on the car window.

Police response - police can cite, but folks just move to another intersection - Please do not give money to people in a dangerous situation-Call 911 if there is rock throwing or someone going out into or wandering in the street.

NEW RECYCLING PROGRAM - MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Bring your # 3, 4, 5, 6 plastics to Ward 6
|

Ward VI has launched a pilot program at their office that compliments the glass recycle/reuse program already in place. Participate and help test this new program to recycle and reuse plastics that cannot be put in your home recycling blue bin.
Continue to recycle plastics #1 and 2 in your home recycling blue bin.
Please consider going a step further and recycle MORE plastic. Take plastics #3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 to the new roll-off container at the Ward VI office. ALL those plastics that contaminate your Blue Recycling Bin, can now be recycled at Ward VI in this pilot program.
You know how the newsletter always says never, ever bag your recyclables? In this pilot program, one of the plastics that can be recycled is PLASTIC BAGS! In fact, Ward VI requests that you bag all the plastic you bring them so that it does not blow around. Bag up bubble wrap, plastic forks and spoons, yogurt containers, Saran Wrap, the wrapping that goes around the meat you buy, plastic tubs, bread bags, food trays, pill bottles, plastic mailers, etc. You do not need to wash anything out (unless it will get stinky) – but please bag up what you bring. Toss it into the new Plastics Only roll-off bin, which is marked, and also the first thing you see when you enter the parking lot behind the Ward VI office, near the glass recycling purple bin.

Meet Clayton Clark. Early this year, after listening to an episode of Arizona Spotlight, which included a segment on the City’s decision to stop picking up glass from household recycling bins, Clayton was inspired to do something. He created a start-up business that will pick up your glass recyclables (for a small fee) from your residence and ensure that your glass makes its way into the recycling stream.

Ward III hosted a Code Enforcement information session. Folks learned learn about the process of reporting a code violation against a neglectful landlord. There were three speakers: Laurie Pumphrey - Interim Supervisor of Code Enforcement, Robert Gonzalez - Inspector, and Shilpa Hunter-Patel from the City Attorney’s office and a city attorney. Laurie explained the process of submitting a complaint by phone, email, or regular mail, information which is also available on the City website here: https://www.tucsonaz.gov/code-enforcement.

REGISTRATION FOR PARKS AND RECREATION FALL CLASSES OPENS JULY 30 |

Tucson Parks and Recreation released its fall 2022 indoor leisure classes schedule featuring hundreds of fun and engaging opportunities for the community. Classes range from arts and crafts, Little Movers and Shakers, dance, gymnastics, jewelry making, glass fusing, music, and more for youth and adults. Get active in a health and fitness class, learn digital photography skills, or create beautiful pottery and ceramics pieces. There truly is something for everyone. Be sure to check out some of the new class offerings like Chair Yoga, BollyX, and Pom. Classes are viewable online now and registration opened Saturday, July 30, at 8 a.m. for city residents and 10 a.m. for non-city residents at the website below. The deadline for registering for session one is Wednesday, Aug. 24.

TUCSON WATER UPDATES REBATE PROGRAMS - Customers can now apply online for residential clothes washer and premium high-efficiency toilet rebates. This means no more paper and quicker processing times. You can apply at the link below. As of July 1, the residential toilet rebate increased to $100 per premium high-efficiency toilet for homes and buildings constructed before 2011. These toilets must be WaterSense certified, flush no more than 1.1 gallons, and receive high flush performance scores.
The clothes washer rebate will now provide customers a $200 rebate only when replacing a top-load machine with a front-load clothes washer from the qualifying product list. Customers replacing a front-load machine or new customers not replacing a machine will be eligible for a $100 rebate. For questions, email pico@tucsonaz.gov, or call (520) 791-4331.

SUMMER - Hints to conserve Water and Power |
|
Beat the Peak … with Pete the Beak! For decades, Tucson Water and Pete have urged Tucson-area residents to conserve water. Now, Pete is asking us to work together to use less power between 3-7 p.m. during summer months.
It’s easy! Just five quick steps you can take between 3-7 p.m. in the summer can make a big difference:
-
Avoid using large appliances. That means doing laundry or running the adishwasher overnight or earlier in the day if possible.
-
Program your pool pump to run during the morning or at midday.
-
Set the thermostat to 78 degrees. In fact, you might consider pre-cooling your home. At noon, set your thermostat three degrees lower than your normal setting. Then, at 3 p.m., adjust your thermostat as high as your family can safely tolerate. This will avoid running the AC while your pre-cooled home slowly warms.
-
Use a ceiling fan to circulate the air and help you feel cooler. It also helps to close the drapes, shades and blinds where possible to keep out the sun’s radiant heat.
-
Grill outdoors or use the microwave at dinnertime to reheat meals you cooked earlier in the day.

FREE SELF-SERVE SANDBAGS
DTM will offer free self-serve sandbags:
East parking lot of Hi Corbett Field, 700 S. Randolph Way, at Reid Park.
Location open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Residents should bring their own shovel. Sand & sandbags will be provided by DTM. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle. DTM staff will monitor the weather forecast as well as the National Weather Service to stage the self-serve sandbag program ahead of the first forecasted storm, to ensure you are prepared.

HELP KEEP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD LOVELY - Every 3rd Saturday of the month, 8:00 am, at the end of Edison at Campbell Avenue, we clean the parklet. Reminders are sent out on Google groups. Garbage bags and tools are supplied. If you do pick up trash during the week, or just prefer to pick it up at a time of your choosing, please contact Joanne Osuna at cricket16@cox.net and your time will count. We report our hours to Tucson Clean and Beautiful as part of the Adopt-a-Park Program.

ONE CALL BRUSH AND BULKY: PAY $55 FOR ANY TIME SPECIAL TRASH COLLECTION. A special trash pick up can be ordered ANY TIME by calling Customer Service at 520-791-3171 or submit an online Service Request. Consider ordering a special pickup if you have a large quantity of bulky refuse that you are unable to take to the landfill and your Brush and Bulky service is not scheduled soon.
Fees for Special Collections are:
· $30 for up to ten cubic yards plus $25 for 15 minutes of collection time-- $55 total.
· $25 for each additional 15 minutes of collection time and $5 for each additional cubic yard.

MAYOR AND COUNCIL APPROVES BUDGET AND EXTENDS FREE TRANSIT - Tucson's Mayor and Council last night voted to approve City Manager Michael Ortega's $2.1 billion budget and compensation plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Part of the budget allows for transit fares to remain free until the end of the calendar year.
MASK REQUIREMENT DROPPED - Sun Tran has been notified that the federal mask requirement is no longer in effect for the public transit industry. Although masks are no longer required, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to recommend wearing a mask while onboard transit vehicles. Please respect those who choose to continue wearing masks. Passengers can request a mask at one of our transit center information booths.
