CLEVELAND LEADERSHIP CENTER

Dr. Claudia Y. Owens has been named to direct Cleveland Leadership Center’s portfolio of Legacy Leaders initiatives that inspire adults who are 50 and older to engage in community issues.

“Claudia’s own background in higher education and nonprofit organizations positions her perfectly to help create opportunities that encourage individuals to utilize their extraordinary skillsets, life expertise, and commitment to the community,” said Marianne Crosley, CLC’s President and CEO. “She will help guide participants in providing service, mentoring, expertise, and connections that expand the ability of organizations and individuals to address social needs and make our community better.”

Legacy Leaders initiatives include those that participants identify or are brought to CLC’s attention by stakeholders seeking support and collaboration to solve problems. Projects have included creating a strategic plan for a newly reorganized nonprofit and mentoring innovative individuals who submit their ideas to CLC’s annual Accelerate: Citizens Make Change civic pitch competition.

Legacy Leaders also implements the multi-generational Advanced Leadership Institute, which brings together those over 50, mid-career professionals, and college students to explore solutions to five issues that have challenged Cleveland for decades: education, health, housing, public safety, and workforce development.

ENCORE EMPLOYMENT ENTERPRISE (E3)

“Encore was what was missing in my job search.”

Johnie Burke had been looking for the right job for some time. She had got a few leads that looked good, but they didn’t pan out. With 20+ years of work as a caregiver and home health aide, she knew she had experience and skills that were in high demand, so why was she not getting the job she wanted? After attending a session sponsored by Encore Employment Enterprise (E3) she reached out to them.

An E3 staff member helped Johnie pull together a strong resume to present to potential employers. Johnie was referred to Visiting Angels, and things moved forward quickly. She was interviewed, invited to attend an orientation session and hired. She was soon given her first patient assignment. Johnie has been happily busy with patient care opportunities since then. She says, “Thanks to Encore, I get good pay and I have not looked back!”

LEADERSHIP GEAUGA

The second Heritage Program Class graduated June 1, 2022. Heritage Program participants deepened their knowledge and appreciation of the challenges and opportunities in Geauga County during their seven week program. Theme days included the History Day Bus Tour, with emphasis on Veterans (three Veterans were enrolled in the Class.) Agriculture Day a class favorite - led to hands-on activities of planting a tree and sunflowers in addition to meeting with Farmers who shared their challenges in a rural community.

Through their behind-the-scenes exposure to speakers and locations from Economic Development to numerous Social Services agencies, the Heritage Class of 2022 developed 3 primary themes for their engagement in projects following graduation, two of which are in process:
1)The Heritage Graduates participated in connecting youth with intergenerational mentorship at the Youth Institute and discussed careers and the high school students’ future dreams and goals. Advice was requested by the rising juniors and seniors of the Heritage retirees. Several youth participants reached out after the program for ongoing assistance from these retirees.
2) The next project underway is tackling a complex challenge of providing affordable housing in rural counties. The Heritage retirees are engaged and passionate about this, with skills and experiences that can be helpful in overcoming the many issues of development in a rural community. This project will continue to grow over the coming months.

The Heritage Program participants demonstrate that retirees, who possess a lifetime of skills and experience, and, provided with the right exposure to community challenges, can help make Geauga and surrounding counties an even better place to live!
