“The greatest weapon against stress is our abitiy to choose one thought over another." ~ William James

Greetings!

Over the past few weeks I have been in California helping my son pack up his apartment and drive East with all of his belongings. There were moments during the effort, in which we both felt overwhelmed-- as if there was just too much to do and little chance that we could get it all done.

Beyond managing the move, we recognized the feelings were compounded whenever we also took in the state of the world-- whether it was raging wildfires, violent crimes, wars, floods, generalized uncertainty, etc.

The truth is that the feeling of overwhelm has been our constant companion for decades as modern life accelerates and endless information streams reach us at all hours. Add the complexities of AI—with its learning demands, unpredictable evolution, and potential to disrupt our careers—and it's no surprise we feel ill-equipped to handle what's on our plates. But feeling ill-equipped is an illusion, and thus we can we can turn to James' quote above.

We often forget that while we can't control everything happening around us, we can control the thoughts we entertain and the actions we choose to take.

Along with Millie Grenough's invaluable stress reduction strategies (click here to access her online training), I want to share a reliable process I call "Go Local."

The Power of "Going Local"

Much like "buying local" supports nearby farms and reduces the distance food travels to reach you, "going local" means reducing the circle of your attention.

When you limit what you focus on, what you need to manage becomes smaller—and therefore more manageable.

Your brain processes fewer questions and data points, making it easier to gain clarity and take action.

Smaller scope = clearer next steps = less mental overwhelm.

August's Sip of Serenity from Oasis

The 3-Step "Go Local" Strategy

1. Start with an Oasis technique

Use the 4-D Dump or 3-BC and take three deep breaths (3-2-1 countdown) to prepare your body and mind for clear decision-making.

2. Ask: "What do I need to handle right now?"

Focus only on what's both urgent and important (Quadrant 1 of Stephen Covey's time management matrix, time management grid).

3. Keep narrowing your focus

Ask again: "And so, what do I need to handle right now?" Repeat until your answer matches what you'd say to: "What can I do right now?"

The result? Your overwhelming to-do list transforms into a single, clear next action. You've successfully "gone local" and saved yourself countless emotional and mental miles.

The beauty of this approach is that it includes a natural pathway for expanding your circle of attention when you're ready—but only after you've handled what's immediately in front of you.

If you’d like to explore how to reduce stress, build emotional resilience, and bring more clarity and steadiness to your life—I invite you to reach out and see if coaching might be the powerful support you or a loved one need.

Wishing you a focused and fun August,

Suzanne

P.S. Oh, and in case you wondering, my son and I got it all done, one box at a time, and then the cross country journey, one mile at a time!
