Tropical Audubon & SACE tackle Turkey Point

Paul Marcellini Photograhy

TAS has joined Southern Alliance for Clean Energy in a Clean Water lawsuit against FPL. Biscayne Bay, Biscayne National Park and South Florida's drinking water supply are invaluable, therefore we took action to protect these irreplaceable resources from Turkey Point-generated pollution. We will keep you posted.

Meanwhile, here are resources to help you better understand the issue:

Thanks to You!

The scoop on Big Sugar
The Sierra Club's Summit #2
Saturday, August 20, 2016, 8:30am

Join fellow Floridians and environmental groups at Sierra Club's second annual Big  Sugar  Summit  in West Palm Beach. The industry's impact on Florida and its citizens is arguably felt from the capitol to the Keys -- from the halls of political power to the threatened rookeries and estuaries under siege in the Everglades and Florida Bay.  Organizers promise to "pull the curtain back" on Big  Sugar . You'll learn why Big  Sugar  has a strangle hold on the Sunshine State, why its lobbyists are so powerful, how its pollution impacts our air and water quality, and why the industry stands in the way of Everglades Restoration. Most important, you'll learn how to advocate for a Big  Sugar  solution.

Registration begins at 8:30am, program begins at 9.  Breakout discussion sessions will be offered twice; sign-up for each is on a first-come basis. Questions? Contact organizer Jon Ullman,  [email protected] , 305-567-0002

#FindYourPark ( FREE National Park Entry)
Happy Birthday to the National Park Service
August 25-28

Park entrance fees will be waived nationwide from August 25 through August 28 to encourage everyone to celebrate the NPS 100th birthday.

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created the National Park Service "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for future generations."

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of that moment and to look ahead to the next 100 years, the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation launched the Find Your Park / Encuentra Tu Parque movement. Inspiring people from all backgrounds to celebrate and support America's national parks and
community-based programs,  #FindYourPark /  #EncuentraTuParque invites people to discover and share their own unique connections to our nation's natural landscapes, vibrant culture and rich history.

Macintosh HD:Users:sarah:Downloads:yes-4-solar-FINAL-.png
How do we make solar energy a priority in the Sunshine State? It starts by boosting voter turnout for the August 30 primary.

Floridians who want to build a clean, sustainable energy future should vote YES on Amendment 4, which proposes to remove taxes on solar power.

Understand Amendment 4: FACT SHEET
Voting is easy in Florida:
  1. Ditch the polls and sign up to vote by mail at floridasolarvoter.com ! You will receive your ballot between July 26-August 2 and should mail it in as soon as possible.
  2. Or, consider voting early August 20-27 .
  3. Enjoy voting on Election Day? Head to the polls August 30! Use this quick tool to mark your calendar: http://bit.ly/vote-aug-30

Infuriated by the Toxic Algae Bloom?
It's Now or NeverGlades: become part of the solution!

Support the 200+ Everglades scientists who believe that  increased storage, treatment and conveyance of  water south of Lake Okeechobee is essential to stop the damaging discharges to the coastal estuaries; to restore the flow of clean, fresh water to Everglades  National Park, Florida Bay and the Florida Keys; to improve the health of Lake Okeechobee; and to protect the drinking water for 8 million Floridians living in Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach counties.

Demand that the planning process for storing more water South of Lake Okeechobee in an Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir begin NOW, not in 2020 under the current timeline! Buying the needed land is an important first step, but The Army Corps of Engineers must take immediate steps to plan for and establish the critically needed EAA Reservoir!

This Land is Your Land:
A Second Century for America's National Parks
thru January 8, 2016

This exhibition considers America's National Park Service as it enters its second century with a particular focus on South Florida's four national park sites: Everglades, Biscayne and Dry Tortugas National Parks and Big Cypress National Preserve. Its purpose is to elevate awareness of our national parks with the hope of motivating action toward their continued protection. Experiential in approach, this exhibition presents natural and cultural objects, artwork and film to communicate the national park idea and experience.

Curated by Jacqueline Crucet and designed by Miami-based design firm SimpleFly Creative, this exhibit is endorsed and supported by the National Park Service.

The Birds Thank "A Best Insulation"

In anticipation of the October 7 "Florida Heritage Site Dedication Ceremony" (circle the date!), our staff spent much of July tidying our historic Doc Thomas House "nest." The top-down deep-clean began in the attic, where more than 8 decades of dust and insect/rodent droppings had accumulated. (It's yucky, but true!) The amazing "A Best Insulation" team generously performed the attic purge for Tropical Audubon Society because its owner, Aldo Acosta, and his wife, Sophie, deeply believe in the conservation work TAS pursues.

"A Best's" local Mission: Improve energy efficiency, comfort, safety and interior air quality for residential homes and commercial buildings.
Its National vision: Preserve our energy resources.
Its Mission for our planet: Reduce humanity's negative impact on the environment.

Supporting vendors that support TAS, such as "A Best Insulation," is an easy way to contribute to our Conservation Mission. The Birds will thank you!

Fully licensed and certified, "A Best" was founded in 2000 and specializes in attic insulation, spray foam insulation, insulation removal and attic clean-up across Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties.
