Business Confidence Improves but More Remains to be Done: 2019 Ontario Economic Outlook

On Tuesday, February 19, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Ontario Chamber Network released our third annual Ontario Economic Report (OER) , offering a unique perspective on the experience of businesses of all sizes across the province. Click here to read the report.
Key takeaways include:

  • Confidence in Ontario’s economic outlook has improved. Thirty percent of members surveyed expressed confidence in Ontario’s outlook for 2019, up seven percentage points compared to last year.
  • Businesses are gaining confidence in themselves. Sixty-one percent of respondents reported confidence in their own organization’s economic outlook heading into 2019, a seven-point increase from last year.
  • Despite a more optimistic outlook for 2019, decreasing levels of organizational and economic confidence over the years have impacted business’ willingness to invest, take risks, and adopt technological advancements. Major challenges relating to the costs of doing business and recruiting and retaining skilled employees remain sources of concern for business.
Ontario Debt Report

In March, the OCC will be releasing Ontario's Debt Report. With the new government announcing a $15 billion deficit going into fiscal year 2019, this report will investigate the nature of Ontario’s debt and re-iterate why fiscal balance is a critical policy concern to industry.
2019 OCC Advocacy Day: March 25

On Monday, March 25, the Ontario Chamber Network will host its fourth annual Advocacy Day at Queen's Park. The program brings together community stakeholders and senior political leaders for important discussions on issues central to the growth of business in Ontario. We hope everyone is getting excited for this year's program!

Canada’s Chambers of Commerce Sound Alarm Over Failure to Get Resources to the World
“The very fabric of our country is being threatened by the devastating impact of low oil prices, our inability to get resources to global markets, and the increasing tensions between resource-producing regions and the rest of Canada,” the Honourable Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “Our natural resources should be a source of pride for all Canadians. As producers of some of the cleanest, most ethically-produced products in the world, we should be doing all we can as a country to get them to global markets, where they can get a fair price, help reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to our prosperity as a nation.”
