Work to rehab four I-225 bridges starts Sunday

The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin work Sunday night, Aug. 10, to improve the driving surface of the northbound and southbound Interstate 225 bridges over Second and Sixth avenues. These bridges have an elevated slope in the middle, and this project will help flatten the driving surface by putting down asphalt between the middle of the bridge and the approaches to each bridge.

Along with leveling out the lanes, this project includes replacing the bridge expansion joints with plug joints, replacing several concrete panels in both directions of I-225 just north of Sixth Avenue, putting down a waterproof overlay and doing a strategic mill and overlay that involves putting down gradually decreasing depths of asphalt from the middle of the bridge to the bridge approaches to even out the roadway surface.

This work will require single and double lane closures in both directions of I-225 from just north of Sixth Avenue (Mile Point 9.5) to just south of Alameda Avenue (Mile Point 7.5) during the overnight hours Sunday through Thursday nights.

Traffic impacts: Overnight I-225 lane closures coming up

Work will be done in only one direction at a time on I-225 from north of Sixth Avenue to south of Alameda Avenue, with single lane closures beginning at 7 p.m. each night and double lane closures at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following day. The lane closure schedule for the week of Aug. 10 is:

  • Sunday, Aug. 10, and Monday, Aug. 11 – Northbound I-225
  • Tuesday, Aug. 12 and Wednesday, Aug. 13 – Southbound I-225
  • Thursday, Aug. 14 – Northbound I-225

What motorists need to know

  • Travel lanes will narrow to a single lane 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in one direction of I-225.
  • Motorists are urged to drive with extra caution through the work zone, heed the signs, watch for crew members and equipment, do not speed and give plenty of following distance.
  • To keep apprised of travel impacts, visit COtrip.org or call the project hotline at 720.634.5333.

The project is expected to take about three months to complete, and later this fall there will be a full closure of northbound I-225 between Alameda and Sixth avenues for five consecutive nights.

Road Construction Work in Progress

Weather delays may be expected for all work zones.

Please note: Although the city informs online mapping services about our road closures and designated detours/alternate routes, the routes they provide to the general traveling public are generally the shortest or quickest routes between two points. That results in drivers sometimes not following the city's designated detour/alternate routes.

Check the road construction updates webpage and the city's social media channels for any unexpected changes to schedules.

East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit

Aurora, in partnership with the city and county of Denver, RTD, CDOT and DRCOG, is celebrating the start of the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Construction on the BRT began in October, starting with the stretch between Broadway and Williams Street in Denver. Construction is not expected to reach Aurora until late 2025.

BRT systems are designed to move more people with more safety, efficiency and reliability. Buses will run down dedicated center transit lanes in Denver and in mixed flow through Aurora, significantly reducing travel times within the project’s boundaries—from Union Station in Denver to RTD’s R Line Station at I-225 in Aurora.

More information—including a small business toolkit with resources for how to thrive during construction—is available at DenverGov.org/ColfaxBRT. Business owners also may take a self-assessment to consider how your business might be impacted by construction and what you may need to do to prepare. Additional resources are available from the Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
