Road Construction Work in Progress

Weather delays may be expected for all work zones.

Please check the road construction updates webpage and the city's social media channels for any unexpected changes to schedules.

In-progress projects

Colfax and Peoria closure update

Demolition work following a recent structure fire continues to impact traffic flow at the intersection of Colfax and Peoria. However, all northbound lanes and one southbound lane on Peoria Street have been reopened, and one westbound lane on Colfax Avenue is now open as well. Any lanes that remain closed are due to safety concerns, but the reopening of lanes will continue incrementally as demolition progresses. Follow the signed detours that remain and use alternate routes.

Alameda Avenue lane closures

- Westbound Alameda Avenue between Peoria Street and Moline Street will have one through lane closed from Dec. 29 to Jan. 31 around the clock to maintain infrastructure as part of a private development project.

- Eastbound Alameda Avenue between Jamaica Way and Nome Street will have two through lanes closed from Dec. 29 to Jan. 30 around the clock to maintain infrastructure as part of a private development project. Expect merging traffic and slow traffic.

Peoria lane closures

Both directions of Peoria Street between Sixth Avenue and Del Mar Circle will have three lanes closed from Jan. 2 to 23 around the clock to maintain utilities due to a private development project. Expect merging and slow traffic.

Airport Boulevard lane closures

Southbound Airport Boulevard between the eastbound I-70 on-ramp and the westbound I-70 on-ramp will have three through lanes closed from Oct. 12 to Jan. 31 around the clock to maintain infrastructure. Plan for delays; use alternate routes.

Mississippi and Havana lane closures

Both directions of Mississippi Avenue between Fulton and Joliet streets will have two through lanes closed around the clock from Nov. 20 to Feb. 28 to maintain infrastructure as part of a private development project. In addition, southbound Havana Street between Kentucky and Mississippi avenues will have one through lane closed around the clock from Nov. 20 through Feb. 28 for the same reason. Expect merging and slow traffic.

I-70 Picadilly Interchange Construction Updates

Over the last few months, much work has been going on behind the scenes on this design-build project. But the project team is happy to announce that construction has officially started. Crews have been busy focusing on earthwork, which will help prepare the ground for future construction activities.

Starting as soon as 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, to 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, crews will close Picadilly Road between Smith Road and 19th Avenue for a temporary pipe installation. The closure will remain in place overnight.

Motorists should follow the posted detour signs to Sicily Street and 19th Avenue. Access to all businesses will be maintained.

Please note that construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change, which may impact schedule and duration. Message boards on the corridor will display any changes to the road closure dates.

Routine Yearly Road Maintenance Work

Aurora’s roadway maintenance programs are designed to provide safe travel conditions throughout the city and preserve the city’s investment in roadway infrastructure. Annual programs are developed to apply the appropriate maintenance strategy at the appropriate time in the roadway’s life cycle.

In 2023, the city delivered on promises to address a top priority of our residents—transportation and roadways—by improving the condition of Aurora’s residential streets. All of the scheduled paving work is now complete.

Annual street maintenance work has not started for 2024. Information will be posted in the coming weeks on this webpage.

East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit

The city and county of Denver, in partnership with RTD, the city of Aurora and CDOT, is moving forward with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on East Colfax Avenue. This project is intended to move more people more efficiently and more safely along the Colfax Corridor.

Based on available funding, construction is slated to begin in 2024 (or 2025 in Aurora), with the system operating starting in early 2027. Buses will run down center transit lanes in Denver and on side-running transit lanes in Aurora. The city of Aurora negotiated an intergovernmental agreement with Denver to fund the design and construction of BRT elements along the Aurora portion of Colfax.
