Potholed roads, inefficient supply chains and growing pressure on regional housing and services remain top concerns for farmers and regional communities heading into the federal election.
National Farmers’ Federation President David Jochinke acknowledged that while major parties and some independents had made funding commitments for supply chain infrastructure, too many crumbling regional roads remain ignored. He said the election was an opportunity to lock in a more sustainable pipeline of funding.

Police are hunting five masked men who forced a lorry driver off the road in southern Italy before detaining him at gunpoint and making off with his highly-prized cargo.

One of Spain's leading olive oil producers is pondering an expansion into the US in response to the tariff war unleashed by Washington, just as its peers are rushing out exports while the bulk of new tariffs are still on hold.

Environmentalists have condemned the unchecked spread of monoculture plantations in Alentejo.
Standing under an enormous olive tree, José Pedro Oliveira gently caresses its gnarled trunk. “It is more than one thousand years. Maybe older than Christ,” he says.
Located near Serpa, in the gently rolling hills of Alentejo in southeastern Portugal, his 30-hectare olive grove is part of a mosaic of oak and fruit trees, pastures and agricultural land that has been passed down through generations.
