APS Annual Awards Ceremony

Come celebrate the year with us at our Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 19, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Yarborough Branch Library – 2200 Hancock Dr, Austin.

Winners of the Annual Contests will be announced at this meeting and first place poems will be read aloud by the poets if they are in attendance.



It will be the final APS meeting of the year until fall, so don't miss out!

APS Memberships Expiring

All APS memberships expire in May, so now is a great time to re-up for next year -- don't miss out on any of the contests or great meetings. You can renew your membership at the final meeting or online here.
APS Saturday Critique Group

The APS Saturday Critique Group will continue meeting through the summer. For upcoming dates and details check the APS website here.

APS Open Mic Night

The next APS Fourth Thursday Open Mic Night will be May 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. at NeWorlDeli , 4101 Guadalupe, hosted by Louise Richardson.

This month's featured readers are: Herman Nelson, Christina Culverhouse, Ron Kewin (singer/songwriter) and Connie Williams .
Poetry Contests and Calls for Submissions

  • Vallum is seeking submissions for its upcoming issue, “The Chase." Deadline is May 30. For more information visit this site.
 
  • The Alabama State Poetry Society is accepting submissions for the annual John and Miriam Morris Memorial Chapbook Competition. The deadline is May 31. The winner receives $100 and 25 copies of their winning chapbook. Poems may be prevviously published if the poet retains all rights. Send 16 to 24 pages of poetry, and two title pages -- one with author identification and one without, along with a $15 reading fee payable to New Dawn Unlimited Inc. to: New Dawn Unlimited Inc., ASPS 2018 Morris Memorial Chapbook Competition, 1830 Marvel Road, Brierfield, AL 35035

Member Publication News

Diana L. Conces has had four poems accepted for publication this month: "Abandoned I-10 Rest Stop: A Love Song" will appear in the 2019 Texas Poetry Calendar. "Almost Forgotten," "Flight," and "Structural Engineering" will all appear in a forthcoming edition of  Scarlet Leaf Review.

A haiku by Christa Pandey is fluttering from a tree in Michigan for the month of May as a community project. She is also happy that the Dripping Springs New Life congregation has decided to sing one of her Psalm-based hymns again on May 6. 

Anjela Villarreal Ratliff had five artistic photos accepted for publication by three literary journals:
About Place Journal Interstice , and  riverSedge: A Journal of Art and Literature.

Brad Strahan 's poem  For G.B . was accepted by the Cape Rock journal.

Barbara Blanks and Nathan Brown presented at the Lucidity Poetry Retreat in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in April.

Marcelle Kasprowicz ' eighth poetry collection, "Once the Continent Was Immense," is now published, and will soon be available on Amazon or by contacting her at mk5842@austin.rr.com . The poetry illustrates some of her experiences as an imigrant in America.
