5-Year Farm Bill Cuts Food Stamps by $20.5 Billion

In a surprise development, the U.S. House dramatically defeated the 2013 farm bill Thursday afternoon with some conservative Republicans joining many Democrats to stop the $940 billion proposal.

In a 195-234 vote, the House defeated the bill after considering more than 100 amendments. Some Democrats opposed the bill because of $20.5 billion in cuts to the food stamp program, while some Republicans believed the bill was too costly and did not have enough reductions.

After the vote, leaders of both parties traded barbs, blaming the other political party for the defeat. The Senate last week approved its version of the farm bill with about a fifth of the cuts in the House bill. President Obama has threatened a veto if the deep food stamp cuts remained.

Food stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or "SNAP," cost almost $80 billion last year, twice the amount it cost five years ago, according to USA Today.

The White House issued a statement earlier this week saying that food stamps are "a cornerstone of our nation's food assistance safety net." The administration suggested that reductions instead could be made to farm subsidies such as crop insurance.

The bill, HR 1947, the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013, provides for the reform and continuation of agricultural and other programs of the Department of Agriculture through Fiscal Year 2018.

Two Brothers Named to U.S. Military Academies
Austin Scott

Several students from the 8th Congressional District, including two from Tifton, recently received appointments to U.S. service academies, including the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, the Naval Academy at Annapolis and the Military Academy at West Point.

U.S. Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., (pictured at left) made the announcements.

"These young students represent our state's best," said Scott. "It's truly inspiring to see the leadership of so many young and talented Georgians who desire to serve our nation by joining the armed forces."

Among those receiving appointments were brothers Brandon Chitwood and Austin Chitwood of Tifton. Brandon has been appointed to the Air Force Academy. He is a 2012 graduate of Tifton County High School, and attended the Air Force Prep School last year. Austin has been appointed to the Air Force Prep School and is a 2013 graduate of Tifton County High. The pair are sons of Michael and Sharmila Chitwood

Upcoming high school juniors and seniors in the 8th District interested in a military academy may attend Service Academy Day on Sept. 14 at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, where representatives from all the academies will be present.
