THE ADVOCATE

From the Front Lines of the Fight to Eradicate Homelessness

40 Years of Transforming Lives

Dear Friends,

As we settle into the year 2024 and continue to provide safe shelter for the most vulnerable of Dallas, I’d like to highlight a few recent wins. Although there is a national spike in homelessness, Dallas has done better than 30 other U.S. cities in reducing homelessness. With the dedicated efforts from our Austin Street team members, donors, and community partners, we all play a prominent role in this sliver of success.

Data shows that the major driver of homelessness in the U.S. is due to the inadequate affordable housing supply which means our efforts in housing-focused case management services and rapid-rehousing programs are more important now than ever. In spite of these challenges, in the last fiscal year, Austin Street was able to transition more than 500 individuals out of our shelter and into homes. With only three months into our fiscal year, we have already housed almost 200 clients – a remarkable feat and testament to how our organization transforms lives.

I am also happy to report on the positive outcomes for the neighbors we served during the 10 days of bitter cold temperatures in mid-January. In partnership with the City of Dallas, OurCalling and other area community providers, we managed and operated three shelters across Dallas serving more than 2,200 individuals. Our team assisted guests at temporary shelters in addition to more than 430 regular clients served on our campus during the stretch of inclement weather.

At Austin Street, there are countless opportunities to recognize the wins in our field, but there is still much to overcome as our organization has expanded to serve and care for more clients. For those looking to become involved with Austin Street, we invite individuals and groups to volunteer, welcome you to join us at our 9th annual No Place Like Home event, or simply spread the stories of our mission to friends and family.

Together, we can create a year full of wins for our clients and ultimately restore hope to those experiencing homelessness.

Inclement Weather Shelter

When arctic temperatures struck the metroplex in the beginning of the new year, Austin Street Center opened and managed an additional shelter from January 12 - January 21 to provide a safe haven for unsheltered neighbors.

Thanks to the help of local partners, Austin Street was able to serve the city's most vulnerable homeless and provided more than 2200 unique individuals with access to medical care, three nutritious meals a day, showers, clothing, and more. When our inclement weather shelter closed, our organization transitioned over 50 individuals to our main shelter, giving them access to housing-focused case management, employment assistance, and life skills classes.

Inclement Weather guest Leonard had never stayed in a shelter and was happy to be at Austin Street during the freeze. He plans to utilize our resources to get back on his feet.

Whether it be subarctic temperatures or the approaching extreme heat of summer, our organization is aware that life-threatening weather conditions will arise and we continue to accept funds and in-kind donations for those events. Welcome Our New Board Members

In November 2023, Austin Street Center announced two additions to our organization's Board of Trustees. We are proud to be joined by Norm Hitzges and Hon. Jeanne L. Phillips as they work alongside our 12 other trustees.

A pioneer in sports radio, Norm hosted the first full-time morning sports talk show in the U.S. over 30 years ago on KLIF.

He completed his 48th year on air, retired in June 2023, and has been honored by the Texas Radio Broadcasters Hall of Fame, the Dallas All Sports Association, and the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame.

Norm also hosts the “Norm-A-Thon”, an annual marathon to raise funds for the homeless in DFW. In 22 years, the event has raised $9M for Austin Street.

Ambassador Phillips serves as the President of Hunt Global Partnerships and was appointed by President George W. Bush as the U.S. Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Ambassador Phillips also volunteers on several local boards and has received the prestigious YWCA Centennial Award, naming her as one of the 100 most influential women in Dallas over the past century.
