Dear Friends,
As we settle into the year 2024 and continue to provide safe shelter for the most vulnerable of Dallas, I’d like to highlight a few recent wins. Although there is a national spike in homelessness, Dallas has done better than 30 other U.S. cities in reducing homelessness. With the dedicated efforts from our Austin Street team members, donors, and community partners, we all play a prominent role in this sliver of success.
Data shows that the major driver of homelessness in the U.S. is due to the inadequate affordable housing supply which means our efforts in housing-focused case management services and rapid-rehousing programs are more important now than ever. In spite of these challenges, in the last fiscal year, Austin Street was able to transition more than 500 individuals out of our shelter and into homes. With only three months into our fiscal year, we have already housed almost 200 clients – a remarkable feat and testament to how our organization transforms lives.
I am also happy to report on the positive outcomes for the neighbors we served during the 10 days of bitter cold temperatures in mid-January. In partnership with the City of Dallas, OurCalling and other area community providers, we managed and operated three shelters across Dallas serving more than 2,200 individuals. Our team assisted guests at temporary shelters in addition to more than 430 regular clients served on our campus during the stretch of inclement weather.
At Austin Street, there are countless opportunities to recognize the wins in our field, but there is still much to overcome as our organization has expanded to serve and care for more clients. For those looking to become involved with Austin Street, we invite individuals and groups to volunteer, welcome you to join us at our 9th annual No Place Like Home event, or simply spread the stories of our mission to friends and family.
Together, we can create a year full of wins for our clients and ultimately restore hope to those experiencing homelessness.
