COLLAGE ON VIEW
At the Threshold
| at the Durón Gallery at SPARC in Venice, California, USA, 24 January-31 March 2025. Presented by the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, many of the works in this exhibition show collage thinking. Society President Karen Fiorito wrote, "Printmaking is similar to collage in that both techniques involve assembling different elements to create a new image by combining various pieces, often from disparate sources, to form a cohesive whole, with the key difference being that in printmaking, the elements are transferred onto a surface using a printing matrix, while in collage, elements are physically glued together on a base material like paper." COLLAGE IN MOTION
Media Archaeology
| Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Nadine Chantal Leclerc translates memories and moments into visual stories. Utilizing media archaeology as a medium and practice, Leclerc creates installations, digital drawings, and animations by combining mediums and disciplines into transmedia works. They interrogate traditional art forms through digital bricolage using personal, commercial and archival imagery. The narrative of their work is supported by teachings they have received on ecology, spirituality, and technology. | | | |
FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY
People-Based Collage
| Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom. Over the years, Paul Brown has created art in a broad array of media. His initial interest in collage stemmed from the desire to produce images for printmaking, but subsequently, he pursued analog collage as a format in its own right, principally sourcing images from newspapers and magazines. The artist enjoys both the craft element of the analog collage process and the intellectual challenge of producing meaningful works from a limited source of materials. The artist is fascinated by the power of the image and its ability to convey meaning and the influence a title has on the viewer’s perception of meaning. Paul’s people-based collage work places characters in stories–stories that could unfold in parallel universes. The viewer is invited into these surreal yet familiar worlds; the ordinary is made extraordinary. | | | |

Autofiction
| Marsha Balian at Transmission Gallery in Oakland, California, USA through 1 March 2025. Marsha Balian admits to difficulty following instructions (unless she really has to). She is self-taught and frequently invents her own techniques. Since invention doesn’t require strict adherence to rules, her art avoids what might be literal and attempts to engage the imagination of the viewer. Humor is never far behind. Of her work, Balian comments, “’Autofiction’ is a literary term describing work that blends fictional and autobiographical elements in writing. It can blur the lines between events in real life, and fictional creation. | | | |
