SmarterProctoring 24/7 Support
SmarterProctoring Support is available 24/7 to both faculty and students. This service can be accessed by cliciking the black "Support" button.
Notes for Students in SmarterProctoring
The Notes for Students Section can be used to provide students with any additional information or steps. It can even be used if you want the student to display something specific (desktop, calculator, etc.) when they conduct the room scan.

Collecting Scratch Paper Following an Examination
If instructors would like to gather scratch paper used by students during their quiz attempt(s), they can do so by creating a separate assignment in their course that will enable students to upload photo(s) of their scratch work to Canvas. To do this:
  • Navigate to the “Assignments” tab within Canvas.
  • Select the Blue “+Assignment” button on the top right side of the page.
  • Title the assignment appropriately (be sure to make reference to the quiz or exam that it compliments).
  • Use the instructions box to prompt students to use this assignment to upload a photo of their scratch paper(s) for that quiz/exam.
  • Set Grading Options:
  • Select the appropriate number of points that you would like to award for the assignment, if any.
  • Decide how you would like the grade to be displayed to the students using the “display grade as” dropdown.
  • If you would not like to assign a grade for the scratch paper upload, check “Do not count this assignment towards the final grade.”
  • In the “Submission Type” box, select “Online” from the drop-down menu, then check the “File Uploads” box.
  • Ensure that the assignment is assigned to “Everyone” and create any due dates or availability dates, if you would like.
  • Click “Save & Publish” to add this assignment to your course.
  • If using modules in your course, add the assignment to the appropriate module just after the quiz that it compliments.

SmarterProctoring and Attachments
SmarterProctoring allows faculty members to add attachments to the examination that the student will have access to during the exam administration. If you add an attachment to the exam, when you set up the exam in SmarterProctoring, you will need to deselect "Disable New Tabs" and "Close Open Tabs" to ensure the student has access to the attachment. If you desire for the student to print the attachment, you will need to deselect "Disable Printing.” Rather than attaching items, other possible options—that will allow you to ensure the highest level of security of the examination—are to consider providing those to the student in advance or embedding the portions of the attachment the student will need into each actual question.

ProctorU
ProctorU has been disabled in Canvas and students will no longer have access to schedule ProctorU appointments in the SmarterProctoring LMS system. However, if instructors were using ProctorU and students have existing appointments past April 3, 2020, they will be able to hold that appointment and test with ProctorU .

Refunds
If students were to cancel their ProctorU appointments and go with automated proctoring, students can be refunded for a ProctorU session as long as they cancel prior to their appointments. Once the appointment is cancelled, an automatic refund process is triggered by the system, and the student will receive a refund in up to ten (10) business days.

If you have any questions on how to get started, please reach out to Dr. Judy Jones-Liptrot, Assessment and Certification Manager at the Deerwood Center ( [email protected] ).

Email that was sent to Students
Hello Student,

We have some good news to share with you. We know since transitioning to online courses, many of you have shared concerns regarding coming to campus to complete proctored assessments and tests. We understand these concerns and have been working to find the best resolution for our students and faculty. In following new guidelines and in order to reduce the need for you to visit an Assessment Center on campus, the College has partnered with SmarterServices, LLC to offer students the ability to test at home using the automated proctoring service, SmarterProctoring™.
This service provides an option for students to remain isolated while still being able to complete required course assessments. Please check directly with your professors to determine if automated proctoring will be used for your course(s).
