In 2021, £935 million was lost to customer theft alone, in the UK

Incidents of customer theft have been increasing year on year and retailers have been facing the difficult task of tackling this rise in criminal activity. The principal challenges have been trying to find solutions which don’t detract from the overall customer experience and which minimise volatile environments, so as to not escalate aggression or violence towards staff.

As a result, Amberstone have partnered with French technology company, Veesion, who use sophisticated algorithm technology to accurately detect and alert to a range of suspicious behaviours by retail customers, in real-time. Veesion is fully GDPR protected and has the additional benefit of being "plug and play", so it can attach to existing analogue CCTV infrastructure without the need for additional investment in cameras or NVRs. It also incorporates active learning technology, meaning it continues to improve performance as more data is analysed and processed over time.

Amberstone customers who have so far implemented the Veesion solution have not only seen a reduction in shrink, but a reduction in recurrent shoplifting, through the system’s ability to identify and alert staff to the presence of prolific offenders. This gathering of machine-learned intelligence also improves loss prevention processes, allowing retailers to take a targeted approach to augmenting system defences, while providing a more robust means of approaching and interacting with suspected offenders.

The Veesion process:

The Veesion Process

ANALYSE: Continuous analysis of all video streams in parallel

DETECT: Detection of gestures associated with theft

DECIDE: Transmission to a human of a video sequence highlighting the detected gesture

ACTION: Confirmation of theft and intervention by security

Gesture & Behaviour Analysis

Gesture & Behaviour Analysis

Veesion can recognise many different types of suspicious gestures and can create alerts accordingly. Typical behaviours the system is programmed to look for are described above. Veesion can also identify and filter out non-suspicious gestures, such as items being put into a shopping baskets or employees cleaning or replenishing shelves, and the system can be programmed to recognise specific requirements, such as staff uniforms, so as to minimise false positive alerts.

Video alerts in real-time

The Veesion system sends a video alert to a human operator who confirms the theft and takes action. Alerts can be sent to different devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets) so that all loss prevention staff are able to take action.
