Happy October!
The leaves are beginning to make a mosaic of color and the reflection on the lake is gorgeous.
I was excited to see some purple mixed with the orange/red leaves near our home.
So inspiring!

Save the Date!
This is a wonderful annual event where 30 artisans open their studios and invite people in to see their work.
The artists in the Water Street mill have invited me every year to join them, as I only have one other artist in my building. I'm so grateful they make room for me, as it is always a fun, upbeat event!
The mill building was built in 1891, is the perfect setting to display art, and it is just three blocks away from my studio.
I'll be selling my jewelry, suncatchers, resin pieces, mosaics, as well as giving a discount on classes (that weekend only).

The New England Mosaic Society (NEMS)
invites you to apply to our
2027
JURIED EXHIBITION
Exhibit will be held at
The South Shore Arts Center, 119 Ripley Rd, Cohasset, MA
January 7th – February 13th, 2027
Reception:
Sunday, January 10th, 2027 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm, EST
I'd love to encourage all of my students and other NEMS members to apply to this show! If you are not a member you can join in January for just $50 and apply to next year's shows.
| |
In addition, with NEMS membership, you can participate in the Zoom
calls with mosaic artists all over the country, community projects, and the
annual brunch at my studio!
There is one member art show per year, where each member has at least one item in the show. In addition there is a juried show, so in that case acceptance is variable and subjective based on the jurors.
But it's always worth applying, as it’s fun when you are accepted to see your work in a gallery space.
| | We make lots of trees of life (an ancient symbol of growth and interconnectedness) in the studio. Well done, Rachel! | Nice job on this glass-on-glass piece, Lynne! | Butterflies are also frequent visitors at the studio. Love it, Donna! | Tissue boxes are also a wonderful, functional mosaic base, and also a common project at the studio! | Cheri does beautiful work with small seed beads and bugle beads! | |
Helen brought in this gorgeous dried mushroom that was one and a half inches thick at the base and asked, "What can I do with this?"
We built a base around it and started to add slate, smalti (an Italian glass), rods, and stone.
I love how it came out, so earthy with depth and detail!

Marcia made this fabulous tea box. The base is a box I found at a yard sale.
I am a yard sale enthusiast, and all my finds are available to my students with class packages for
free.
| |
Yuki brought in a picture from the internet as inspiration for this piece. I love it!
I always think my students’ work is better than the original inspiration pictures they bring in!
| |
Sonja's first slate piece.
She is now working on a very ambitious slate project, you will see in the next newsletter.
| Lois worked really hard on this bouquet and it shows. | Nina wanted to create a piece similar to her wallpaper. She nailed it! | |
Jean hung this piece on her house, between her garage doors.
She says the sparkle is so joyful in the sun!
| Melissa makes castles for her grandkids! | Anna did a great job with her hummingbird and her fun-loving, creative daughter needed to be part of the photo op! | |
Gift Certificates!
The best gifts are experiential! Consider giving a gift of a class for birthdays, family reunions, and other occasions.
Recipients can also use the gift certificates for artwork or jewelry.
| |
If you are in an organized group (book, card, neighborhood), have a family gathering coming up, or have a birthday (adults and children ages 8 and up) let’s plan an event!
***
Adults can choose one of these three options:
| |
1) coaster/light switch covers
2) mosaic jewelry
3) suncatchers (May-Oct)
In children’s classes, students ages eight and up can cut tile and cover a wooden shape of their choice.
| |
I hear this all the time! After taking any art and specifically mosaic classes, students see color and light differently in everyday life.
Students talk about noticing contrast, texture, light, and the subtle beauty of a slight color variation.
I always look at the sky and water and say, "I have glass that color," or "How could I capture that in glass?"
It goes on and on throughout the day and adds spice to everyday experiences!
