Introducing the Green Team

As our long-time customers and colleagues know, we are always pushing ourselves to continually improve sustainability.

We’ve begun a new initiative to figure out what we can do better to improve our sustainability in every department.

The Green Team, made up of one member from each department, meets monthly to discuss the ways our company can meet and exceed our goals to be as low-waste, low-impact, and environmentally conscious as possible.

David Winston on Adaptogens
Since I published the first edition of my book Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina and Stress Relief in 2007 (the expanded and updated second edition published in 2019), the world has changed, and people’s health needs along with it...

Adaptogen Simples: Structure Function Claim Revisions
Single extracts that are adaptogens are now labeled to say so, and we’ve updated their structure function claims accordingly:
Ashwagandha----------Calming Adaptogen/Balances Stress
Red Ginseng------------Adaptogen – Enhances Vitality & Energy
Eleuthero---------------Adaptogenic Balance for Stress and Mental Clarity
Cordyceps--------------Adaptogenic Support for Healthy Immune Function
American Ginseng-----Adaptogenic Balance for Stress/Promotes Energy
Schisandra--------------Adaptogenic Support for Stress
Rhodiola----------------Stimulating Adaptogenic Support for Nervous System
Staff Picks
And Since Adaptogens are our thing, we thought it would be fun to share some of the staff favorites:

  • Beth Lambert, CEO : Daily Adapt! I love this formula. It’s a great afternoon pick me up in my tea. And I rely upon it before I compete in equestrian dressage events to get me focused.”
  • Alice Masotes, National Sales Manager: “I take Immune Adapt™ every day as I have had some health challenges in the past and it keeps my immune system strong.”
  • Karen Tuorto, Marketing Manager: “When the stress levels start to creep up, Calm Adapt is my go to, it really helps to calm the mind so I think clearly.”
What’s Hot? Of course...Adaptogens
Some of our biggest sellers lately are Calm Adapt™, Energy Adapt™, and PhytoCalm™. This makes a lot of sense to us - where there is mask wearing in public people are not getting sick as often, but they are very stressed, and many just feel burned out. We’re glad we can help!
Pandemic (and Other Crises) Status Update
An aspect of the pandemic we would not have predicted is how familiar we’ve all become with supply disruptions caused by shipping delays. As if climate change challenges were not enough, these delays have been affecting the safe arrival of some of our fresh herbs.

Fresh materials shipped overnight not arriving for 2-3 days have to be composted. Insurance checks are not the same as having the herbs to make into extracts. Staffing changes at our shipping companies...leave deliveries at the wrong address. Add to that, the wet or dry or hot or cold extremes have our farmers and wild-crafters coping with unusual challenges.

But, we’ve been buying dried herbs, bottles and other ingredients ahead of planned dates to make sure we get the quality we expect in the amounts we need. And fortunately, we have great relationships with our growers & suppliers.

All in all, though, we’re doing well in keeping our customers supplied with the immune and stress products that continue to be in high demand. However, price increases suppliers are incurring are passed on to us, and we’ve had surcharges on UPS and other shipments due to gas prices, so we are faced with the need to increase our prices as of January 1, 2022.

What’s Garbling?
Garbling is a funny word, isn’t it? At Herbalist & Alchemist, we take an actual hands-on approach to our plant material.

Garbling is the process of sorting through fresh plant material, stem by stem, root by root, and removing any unusable matter. Woody stems, wilted or brown leaves, unfortunate little bugs, and any plant material that is not the herb we are processing, like stray grass or wildflowers, is removed to leave only the best quality herb for the next step of processing.
While garbling is a necessary first step after having received the fresh plants from our farmers, it is also a beautiful way to get acquainted with the herbs.

Once you’ve garbled 100 pounds of Cleavers in a day, you will likely be able to identify it in the wild for the rest of your life. You begin to understand the look, feel, and scent of the herbs. You learn what they should look like at their healthiest, what they smell like at their freshest, and how they should feel in your hands.

Our senses catch what a machine can’t, and it is that handcrafted quality that sets our products apart.
David Winston’s Students: Where are they Now?
Veterinarian Dr. Kendra Pope began her training in holistic therapies while still in veterinary school and has studied a wide range of modalities. Dr. Pope’s holistic training is an ongoing journey, with interests in herbal medicine, intravenous nutrient therapy, and mistletoe therapy, as well as all innovative and novel integrative oncology approaches.
Media update
Whole Foods magazine asked us for information on herbs that address Mental Health.
We’ve been working with vets for 15 – 20 years and have a good understanding of what works for pets. We were happy to contribute to this Whole Foods magazine article on the booming pet health market.
Remember ephedra? NutraIngredients-USA recently published a very interesting article looking back at the circumstances around the banning of that herb in the US 20 years ago.
