Revealing a link to our past
"stone walls offer a trace of countless individual acts etched on the landscape.”

Have you ever been hiking in the woods and come across an overgrown or partially buried stretch of rock wall? If so, you more than likely came across a relic of our bucolic past. These walls bridge a time in history when there were more cows than people in the valley. In the early 1800s, many farms peppered the landscapes with rock wall borders separating one field from the next. But how did these rock walls get here? Preparing a field that wouldn't break a plow would require a person to carry rocks by hand or by horse and sled. Farmers formed walls that helped both to mark property boundaries as well as serve as a barricade to contain livestock. These farmstead stone walls remain a testament to the hard work it took to create farms in the valley from the 1600s through the mid-1800s.
Current Farming Projects
In the 20th century, many farmers abandoned their fields and livelihoods for less laborious work. Without constant diligence, trees and nature quickly returned fields to forests. Right now we are in the process of turning back time on the historic farm fields surrounding the new farm store location.

In stark contrast to the days of carrying stones by hand, these machines are making quick work of transforming an old overgrown field back into modern useful agricultural land.
We started by cutting back the field edges, revealing the beautiful rock walls and making space for fencing. In addition, we are also adding water lines to support the sustainable rotational grazing of livestock on the property. We recently moved our pasture-raised lambs to this location and you will be able to see the animals on the land once again. Come and visit our farm store to see the progress as this project continues. Thank you for your support as we keep the tradition of agriculture alive.

Back at the home farm
It is hard to believe another summer has come and gone. We are just finishing up with the fall calving and are preparing the farm for winter. Soon our focus will shift from constantly moving the herd around the pastures to now keeping them near the farm in "sacrifice fields" where we can offer them shelter, water from frost-free hydrants and feed them the hay that we have spent the summer making.
Lamb

The holidays are approaching, reserve a pasture raised leg of lamb or rack of lamb now before we sell out for the season. We also have shanks and stew meat in stock for comfort meals as well as the tried and true ground lamb and loin chops.
Farm Store
As a reminder, the new farm store is located at 438 Route 94, Vernon, NJ. This is about an 8-minute drive from the farm, near the Appalachian trail-head at the base of the Wawayanda Mountains.

We are open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.

Beef Stew with Ossobuco (shin bone) is the perfect Sunday meal. Easy to prepare and warm on a cold day. Now offering an organic soup-kit as the perfect complement to our meat!

Our Approach:

  At Lowland Farm, meat is
  • Responsibly Raised: Cows and sheep graze pastures and eat hay exclusively, the food that best suits their ruminant stomachs. Pigs live naturally, foraging in woodland habitats.

  • Sustainably Grazed:  We rotationally graze on our rolling pastures and woodlands, which keeps fields and forests healthy and minimizes erosion and silting of Pochuck Creek.

  • Reasonably Priced:  We do not think that "local and natural at any price" is a sustainable approach.

Please forward this newsletter to anyone you think may be interested in a local farm specializing in responsibly raised, sustainably grazed, and reasonably priced beef, lamb, pork, and poultry. For more information, visit our website: lowlandfarm.com

Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you at the store.

Sincerely,

Lowland Farm staff
