Fall is here!
Autumn 2019 Newsletter

A Word from Dionne Cox, our New President

I am honored to represent all of you as the 2019-2020 President of the Board of Directors of LVA-HBPL.

I've been involved with LVA for 23 years and am still amazed at the dedication of all involved with the program. The staff and volunteers at Central Library and Oak View, lead by the extraordinary efforts of Diane Moseley and Amy Crepeau help us to make our program what it is today.

Our outgoing President, Julie Hyden is certainly owed our gratitude and special thanks for all she accomplished and set up for our continued success this year.

I look forward to sharing ideas, information, and working with everyone in the coming year.

We couldn't accomplish what we do without you.

Summer has come and gone, and Fall is upon us. We have been as busy as ever!
Literacy Volunteers closed its 2018-2019 season on June 19, 2019, with a beautiful "Come Read in Our Garden" themed Awards Night. It was an evening filled with laughs, camaraderie, touching stories and most of all, heartfelt acknowledgements to those who worked so hard to make their and others' dreams come true.

Introducing 2019-2010 board!

"Writer to Writer" entrant!

Continued fundraising? You bet! On June 6, we had a Mat Pilates fundraising class taught by Devra Swiger and on October 3, Lazy Dog hosted another 15% off total bill fundraiser for us!

October 3, 2019 ~ Great time had by all at Lazy Dog in Westminster, CA!

Many thanks to Devra Swiger at Ab-Solutely Pilates for your contributions, time, and energy given to Literacy Services!
Throughout the 2019 summer we held many classes and workshops, including a June 5 Grammar Sleuth class, which broke down and built back up sentences with diagramming exercises, and most recently a "Writing Workshop" to teach tutors how to help their learners to love to write. We also have ongoing  Citizenship Classes at both tutoring sites (Oak View and Central libraries).

On October 12, 2019, Literacy Volunteers partnered with Dyslexia Voice, for their "Dyslexia Awareness and Education Event".  An estimated 70 to 80%  of people with poor reading skills are likely dyslexic; and 5 to 15% of children and adults in the U.S. have dyslexia, so teaming with Dyslexia Voice was a natural fit. There was a tremendous line-up of speakers in the theater, an area for exhibitors, a breakout area for light snacks and drinks, and a crafts room for children. So much information was shared, so many voices spoke for this important cause, and all who attended made the day a success.

7th Annual Wine and Words!!
November 8, 2019
Seacliff Country Club

On Friday, November 8, 2019, Literacy Volunteers-Huntington Beach Public Library will host its 7 th  annual "Wine & Words" fundraising event in support of the city's library literacy program. Event goers will have an opportunity to mingle and bid on silent auction baskets and raffle items, while enjoying light refreshments, wine, and coffee; cash bar will be available.

We will hear from adult learners and how through literacy, their lives have been changed, and what dreams they still wish to accomplish.

Our featured speaker is New York Times' best-selling author, Lisa See,  who will talk about her own journey through writing. Her new  novel,  The Island of Sea Women , is about the free-diving women of South Korea's Jeju Island.

Join us at Seacliff Country Club for a wonderful evening! Go to hbwineandwords.com to register or call the Literacy office (714) 375 5102.
