3G Pitch Fundraising

Union Members and both past presidents Gay Mangan (LC 1959) and Patrick Curran (LC 1975) started a very successful fundraising project in 2020 for an All Weather 3G Pitch for Rockwell. The total estimated costs for the project is

€800,000

€650,000 for phase 1- the pitch construction and covering, fencing, goal posts, dug-outs and pathway for machinery and players access to the pitch.

€150,000 for phase 2- for floodlights which are to a “night time game & training” standard.

With a massive €481,701 raised so far for phase 1, fundraising team have asked us to reach out to the wider Rockwell College Union community for help to raise the remaining €170,000 to complete the phase 1 target.

If you would like to support and donate to this amazing project you can find all the detail on how to make a donation HERE

We will keep you updated on this project in the months ahead.

College Update

In its first year of co-education in 2023, Rockwell College welcomes girl boarders, transforming the educational landscape.

Traditionally, girl boarders at Rockwell College resided with local host families. However, this year heralds a new era where they can reside on the campus. This change significantly benefits parents, offering a single drop-off location, a central point of contact, and fostering sibling support within the same nurturing environment. Full article in the Munster Express HERE

The previous president Ms Yvonne Kennedy had presented the school with a donation from the Union in May of this year.

" These funds have been well received. Thank you to the RCU for the donation towards the girls boarding facility in May. The donation has been spent on refurbishing and furnishing a girls Common Room & kitchenette and purchasing 2 rowing machines and a treadmill for girls use in the Gym, as well as upgrading security cameras on the wing"

Celebrate The Brave!

At the Rockwell College Union we celebrate Rockwellians in Sport, in business and in public life but most of all we celebrate the BRAVE!

Derek McCarthy attended Rockwell in the 1970's. He is a survivor of sexual abuse while attending Rockwell. His story came to the public eye in January of this year and by July 20th 2023 he had won his claim against the Spiritan congregation at the Four Courts in Dublin (Derek Pictured Above)

I caught up with Derek in August by FaceTime call and what struck me straight away was his immense positivity and warmth as a human being despite what had happened to him as a young boy at Rockwell. Derek describes now that the case is settled " being able to step outside the box" he'd had been in for so many years.

Derek told me if any Rockwellian following his story and who wants to reach out and connect with him directly to please do so by Facebook messenger. Derek told me he would be available to talk to any Rockwellian if they needed advise or help if they have suffered the same.

Derek talks of the Spiritan congregation settlement:

"While they did acknowledge it, I got no formal apology"

Thank you Derek for talking to us.

And since we spoke to Derek in August another newspaper article has updated information from the case. HERE

You can read more about Derek's story HERE

There is also a TIPP FM podcast interview of Derek HERE

Website

Back in May we set out as a governing body to improve the membership experience through improving how we communicate with you. We have worked on our database of members and constantly adding to the system with the most up to date info. We added to the events this year.We also needed to rebuild the Union website. The old side was many years old and certain pages became unresponsive and the user experience was very poor with many people telling us they could not book events.

I'l delighted to say the new Union website went live today. With lots of the information brought across onto a new modern system. We will spend the next few months adding to and updating the information on it, so please bear with us.

"A day in my shoes"

with Jessica Long

This is a new feature of our newsletter where we connect with our Rockwell College Union Community and ask them to share with us a little insight into their day.

We recently caught up with Jessica Long (Class of 2005) Head of Commercial for Irish Rugby. Jessica lives in Dublin with her husband Colm and their (almost ) 2 year old son Colm.

cont:

Jessica is the Head of Commercial for Irish Rugby, and with this she is responsible for the sponsorship relationships & other revenue streams. She and her team are the day-to-day link between all sponsors & the team, this involves navigating busy schedules & delivering for both the organisation & the partners.

With the success of Irish Rugby across the board and the Rugby World Cup work load, she is a very busy lady indeed.

Last December Jessica received the accolade as one of the top 50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport 2022-

How does your normal day begin?

5:45am wake up, 6am gym or run, 7am get toddler up, 8am breakfast, 9am work! I find getting a workout done in the morning means a more productive day all round & I don’t have to worry about factoring it in later in the day. I’m office based for the most part & really enjoy the structure being in the office gives to my day.

Tell us about your biggest daily challenges.

Trying to fit it all in! Since Covid, it feels like everything is busier, I am adjusting to a whole new family life with a toddler in tow, which is amazing, but hard to juggle my passion of exercise & work with toddler life.

What do you love most about the work that you do?

I love working in sport. I’ve been lucky to have had two roles in the sporting world & my experience of working in sport has been that you’re working with self-motivated people. Our executive team, players & coaches across the board are an incredibly self-motivated group, everyone is responsible for driving their own results. For me that drive is tangible, work rarely feels like an uphill battle.

Two days are never the same, managing a portfolio of 20 partners, with terms ranging from 3 – 5 years means that we are always collaborating with our partners, in a job that used to be quite seasonal, we are now pretty much ‘always on’. When the team is winning, our sponsors are winning too, but we need to work hard on ensuring that our partnerships prevail regardless of team performance at any given time.

The excitement when a team is doing well is a great part of my job, winning a Grand Slam or having both men’s & women’s 7s teams qualified for the 2024 Olympics, (featuring past pupil Harry McNulty) makes for an exciting outlook within Irish Rugby.

The growth & ambition of the organisation is very motivating & we are always looking at where the new opportunities lie – whether that’s within the digital space or how we can greater grow the women’s game in terms of participation & the number of partners investing in it.

How do you switch off and relax?

Exercise followed by a family brunch in 3Fe.

Favourite destination in Ireland to plan a few days away and why?

It’s a tight one between Kerry & Donegal – they’re almost like carbon copies of each other, both have great cycling & beautiful landscapes. Donegal probably pips Kerry at the post as my husband’s family live on the beautiful Inishowen peninsula.

Favourite Holiday Destination Worldwide?

This is really tough – I love a New Year ski trip, or a sunny, hilly, cycling destination – I’m open to suggestions!

Business Motto of Motivation?

“No thank you, I can’t afford to panic.” – Ryan Holiday.

It’s not totally business-related, it reaches much broader, but I try to apply it to all areas of my life.

Most memorable thing about Rockwell?

Playing hockey, running around the lake & making the great friends I still have today. We were really well looked after while there, with a special shout out to Hughie who always went above & beyond.
