More Wakians Speak Out

~ From P. Vullo in New York [Sept. 2023]: “I just finished your final book in the Honor series, Full Naval Honors. I found it to be an excellent, thought provoking story, often very emotional. I shall miss Peter Wake. I hope you keep writing because you have a talent for creating 'page turning' stories. I can't wait for your next series (I think you're still young enough); after a good rest that you deserve.

Best regards...”

~ From R.Talbot Jr. in Connecticut [Aug. 2023]: “I have just completed the final novel in the Honor Series and consider myself to be a true Wakian as has Missy, my wife. I just want it all to continue. I believe as I do with A LAND REMEMBERED have to reread the Honor Series every few years....”

~ From D.Lambert, USN (Ret.) in Minnesota [July 2023]: “Sir, I am an aficionado of the age of sail historical fiction genre and just finished reading your entire Honor Series today. The comparison of your work to Patrick O'Brian's HMS Surprise series is dead wrong. Yours is much better. Your research was much deeper and the characters you created were brilliantly vibrant. Thank you for covering so much history not taught at USNA when I attended 50 years ago. Very Respectfully...”

WAKIAN SIGHTING

Wakian Lorena Patton in Cambodia

All the way from Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia, Wakian Lorena Patten took the time to have her photo taken wearing her Onward & Upward hat. I've been to those temples, and they are impressive. What an adventure & thanks for sharing Lorena!

IN PETER'S WAKE

Washington D.C.

National Portrait Gallery 1898 exhibit in Washington DC

Next time you go to Washington DC, tour the National Portrait Gallery at 8th & G Streets NW (near Metro stop Gallery Place) and visit the fascinating exhibition entitled: 1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions. Colonel Michael Woodgerd (U.S. Army, Ret—yes, the model for "Woodgerd" in my Honor Series) took Nancy and me there in October. I was amazed! It has unique art & artifacts from the Spanish-American War and the period of 1898-1900, with displays showing many of the places in my books: Cuba (photo above), Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the Philippines—and the personalities, like General Leonard Wood (1860-1927). That remarkable man (photo below) was the dear friend of Theodore Roosevelt and the only Army doctor to ever become Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. This exhibit will be there until 25 Feb 2024. The Gallery is open from 11:30am to 7pm every day except Christmas. Admission's free! For more info, visit: https://npg.si.edu/exhibition/1898-imperial-visions-and-revisions.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

I’ve been profoundly blessed to have had extraordinary people influence my life. Sadly, many are gone now: family like my larger-than-life Dad and my Mom-in-law Ruth Glickman; men I’ve served with here and abroad like Chuck Clingenpeel, David Tsur, and Keith Saunders; Wakians who became friends like Carolyn Ford and Rufus Getzen; sailors like Charley Morgan and Bob Duff; and most recently, my friend Lynne Kemper. There have been far more than just these mentioned, and each of their memories always brings a smile to me when I remember their laughs, wisdom and accomplishments.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I hope you take a moment to remember those people who helped make you the person you are. Give thanks for having them in your life, and then carry on in a fashion which would make them proud.

Onward & Upward my friends, for us all,

Bob
