Early autumn is a good time to consider sowing some hardy annuals. Sowing now will result in easy germination in the warm soil and a chance for the root systems to start developing. Growth will slow down over the winter but the seedlings will be robust enough to survive the colder months. As soon as the weather warms up and the day length increases in early spring these seedlings will be ready to leap into action and your early planning will be rewarded with bigger, better and earlier flowers than if you’d waited to sow in spring. Of course, you can do that too for a long succession of flowers.
