Summer is here. We can finally take delight in the outdoors under the nice warm sun. As we enjoy our lush landscapes something more sinister could be happening in our plants. This is the time of year we start to see destruction from Japanese beetles, Dutch Elm disease, and Emerald Ash Borer along with drought and herbicide damage. Autumn Tree, Lawn & Landscape has spotted the following tree damage in Denver. Please take the time to inspect your trees and shrubs. And remember to never move firewood.

Leaf Miner
Various types of leaf miners attack various kinds of plants. It appears as yellow squiggly lines in the leaves. damage can also appear as spots or blotches.

Leaf Curling Aphids
During moist & humid conditions the Ash leaf curl aphid is able to thrive in Ash trees & Plums. The leaves affected can not be cured.

Toxicity
Broad-leaf weed control applied to turf near tree roots affects Deciduous trees and Evergreens. Leaves turn brown and drop.

Redheaded Ash Borer
These borers attack nearly all dying and dead hardwoods. Watch out for your Ash, Oak, and Hackberry trees. Oval/Round shaped emergent holes in bark.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
Die back of upper and outer crown after years of larval feeding. Tree shows dead branches in the crown along with leaf loss and discoloration. D-shaped emergent holes in bark.

Apple Scab
A fungal disease that forms pale yellow or green spots on the surface of leaves. Dark, velvety spots may appear on the lower surface. Severely infected leaves become twisted and puckered and may drop early in the summer.

Dutch Elm Disease
Dutch Elm disease can be terminal to American Elm trees. Fungus carried by Elm bark beetle.

Gummosis
A form of Cytospora Canker, Gummosis attacks Spruce, Peach, Cherry, Apricot and Plum trees. Very destructive

Mountain Pine Beetle

Mountain Pine Beetles have been the most destructive since 1996, about 3.4 million acres of Lodge-pole and Ponderosa Pine have been destroyed. Preventative spray on Pine trees can help with these burrowing pests. Mountain pine beetles affect pine trees by laying eggs under the bark. The beetles introduce blue stain fungus into the sapwood that prevents the tree from repelling and killing the attacking beetles with tree pitch flow. The fungus also blocks water and nutrient transport within the tree.

Shadblow Serviceberry is a dense multi-stemmed shrub or small tree that can reach 15-20 feet tall. It is covered in clusters of white flowers in early spring and produces berries. It sports green foliage throughout the season which transition to orange in the fall. Shadblow Serviceberry should be grown in full sun with moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Although prone to fire blight and it is resistant to pests. The Shadblow Serviceberry is ideal for small home landscapes.
