October Travel

Richard and I enjoyed opening my studio to the community both weekends in October. It is always a pleasure to host and see many of my paintings in frames. You are all so kind to take your time to visit. We traveled back East to visit family and friends immediately after the end of Open Studio, and we caught some of the New England fall color. I grew up there in the farmhouse on the Quonquont farm (shown here) in the days of yore, and still - WOW.

Open Studio Drawing Winners

Thanks so much to all the wonderful visitors to my studio at this year's Open Studio. Here are the results of the drawing we offered this year, with first prize of one of my framed original paintings. I use a random number generator to give me the winners, after shuffling and numbering all the cards. I do want it to be fair so everyone who visits and fills out a card has a chance to win. All winners were notified and picked up their prizes on Monday after the close of the show on Sunday.

May Lake Triptych

This year the first prize painting was won by Catherine C. But then, Catherine chose to give up that painting and instead use it as partial payment for the May Lake Triptych. The triptych was hanging above the back studio door. I am happy that she found this set of 3 12"x12" paintings to go with her newly painted blue walls. These 3 paintings were made after a five-mile hike by Richard and I up to May Lake in the Yosemite High Country. I am so pleased they found a new home!

The second-place winner, the choice of a print, was Stan K, who chose Poppies on the Coast. A pack of 5 notecards went to the 3rd place winner, Jean G.

Open Studio Peoples Choice "Awards"

When you visited, many of you filled out a card and chose a favorite painting. The most votes went to Cypress Dance 30”x40”. Second and third were a tie, Clouds Over Big Sur, and Poppy Meadow.

Tip for Artists:

Tip for artists lights and darks small

I struggle to keep my color clean. There are some tips I have picked up over the years which I can share with you. Try to use a different brush for each color, but especially a separate brush for your lights and your darks. It is hard to hold many brushes at once, so a jar on your side table for the dirty ones, and a handy brush holder to hang on your easel when plein air painting are great tools to have.

Keep one area of your palette to mix dark colors and one area for mixing light colors. Keep them separate. Clean off your palette when it becomes too crowded (covered in piles of various color mixtures). Scrape the colors into a pile that you can use to add grays to mute bold color. Achieving bright clean color depends on a bit of care, and can result in a more successful painting.
