Wes and I had a great sojourn in Honolulu in August & September, where I was engaged in my yearly ink drawing series TATTOO DETOUR, coming home with over 50 drawings. At home I've been returning to larger work on canvas, starting with ink on the gesso. A couple examples, both coming out of the drawings.

And the nice news this fall is a wonderful group I am in, of 8 painters at the Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston, Maine. I just got home from the opening early this week. (See below). I completed this painting the day before I flew out!

Jack Balas, 2022; HEADED TO MAINE (#2365); India ink on paper, 22x30 inches
Text:
I am headed to Maine day after tomorrow at the height of autumn, to be in a show. Bates College is flying me out and putting me up and it's not the first time either- in Maine, Iowa, Texas, more. The first time I was on my own, sleeping in my car, climbing Katahdin, even met Andrew Wyeth.
If you told me way back then I'd be doing this all today I'da said Huh? You nuts? Where do I sign up? Some people say you need a roadmap, but Joseph Campbell said it best: Follow your bliss.
This dog followed me into this painting and at first I thought of a title "A Dog's Life," until I looked up the meaning. No Way. So much better is the Marine I met on the beach in Honolulu. He'd just spent four months at sea and now was on shore leave. He kept looking around and shaking his head, smiling and saying to himself "Livin' the life. Livin' the life." If he ever needs a dog I've got one in mind.
Today is (was) October 25 & 26, 2022.
Installation view of my work in 8-artist show at Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, Maine, centering on affinities with Maine native son Marsden Hartley.
“AND SO DID PLEASURE TAKE THE HAND OF SORROW AND THEY WANDERED THROUGH THE LAND OF JOY” October 28, 2022—March 18, 2023 Organized by Dan Mills, Museum Director.

Each artist was invited to select a drawing by Hartley from the Bates collection, to hang on the wall with their work. I chose one of Hartley's beefy standing nudes. (OMG)

Self-portrait with Andrew Wyeth's 1938 tempera YOUNG SWEDE, at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, to which I had the pleasure of day-tripping while in Maine, along with going to Colby College's Museum of Art. So many works I've never seen in all the history books out there!
My most recent MUSE/ MUSEUM piece from the October issue of ArtForum. Definitely in homage to Chris Burden, as many of the series are so dedicated. CHRIS BURDEN: WHAT MY DAD GAVE ME (ANOTHER SHOT IN THE ARM). I laugh at the 3 or 4 ways you could read the title, LOL. (Ask me...)
