Department President
MEMBERSHIP? YES, PLEASE!
Right now, membership should still be a main focus. We have several months to go to make the most of this year and reach the national retention goal of 95% by August 1. As most of you know, retention has been my priority for membership this year since Iowa has had a history of losing several members each year. I do realize that some of this is due to death but ¾ or more is just someone who either forgot to pay their dues and no one reminded them or they have lost their why. Reach out to those people who are unpaid on your rosters and remind them of their why. Gently ask them what your Auxiliary could do to get them back! If they say meetings are the issue tell them they are not required and that just paying their dues helps in so many ways. Long gone are the days that we can expect all of our members to come to every meeting. YES, we want active members but that doesn’t necessarily mean they must attend every meeting. I have members who will bring food for meals, funeral luncheons, and bake sales and that is it. They also will help work or support the meals. This IS an active member as far as I am concerned. As of April 1, we were at 88.45% of total membership and 86.38% retention. Let’s work together to reach that retention goal of 95% by August 1!
Don’t forget that impact reports will be due soon. Anyone who has done ANY volunteering should be filling out the member impact report and getting it to their unit President. The information from these impact reports is essential in our reporting to National and to Congress about our impact as an organization. Impact reports can be found on the Iowa website under forms and resources then Individual member resources and then Member Impact Form.
Time is winding down, so please continue to invite me to your events and meetings. As always, I am willing to help you with whatever you need or answer any questions that you have. Please feel free to call if you need help or have a question. My contact information is in the Blue Book or you can call the Department Office and Crystal will give you my number.
Keep turning in that membership and let’s hit that goal together!

Warmer weather is approaching, and hopefully, this will give more people the break they need to refresh and recharge. If you don’t feel like you can or you aren’t recharging and everything is still piling on you, take a moment to breathe. Call someone and talk to them. Did you notice that your friend or coworker seems unusually stressed lately? Invite them to coffee or have a conversation with them and check in. See how they are doing. Talking with someone helps more than you know. This is a fact and one that I share all the time in our Be The One Trainings.
We have held some great Be The One Trainings and workshops this past month. I’m excited to see more people taking part in them and helping spread the word. What are you or your Unit/Post doing to help spread the word? Do you have a flyer posted in your building about Be The One? Do you host dinners or coffees and mention it during them? Take a few minutes at each gathering, whether it’s a community dinner, bake sale, event, or even your regular meetings, and have a Be The One check-in. Make sure everyone is aware of what Be The One is and how they can help or how they can participate. The more it’s out there, the more people will remember and the better reach we have to help those who are or may be in a crisis. If you need any materials, go to www.BeTheOne.Org for information and flyers you can share, or contact me, and I will help get you anything you need.
If you are interested in setting up a training class for your Unit, Post, or community, please scan the QR Code below to get signed up. It’s free. Anyone can take it, and it only takes 90 minutes of your time – that’s nothing when it comes to helping save lives!
Be The One Training Request Form- See QR code.
Remember: ASK The Questions. Take the TIME. You never know what someone is going thru until we ask. Until we take the time. MAKE the time. LISTEN when someone talks. We all have it in us, it’s just taking that step to reach out. Recognize that it’s the little things that have the largest impact. It’s ok to NOT be ok .. we just need to understand that and help others understand that as well and know that it’s truly ok.

Committee Appointments
A New Year, A New Way to Serve
The New Year is a perfect time to reflect on how we can grow and serve in new ways. Members of the Department of Iowa American Legion Auxiliary are encouraged to consider getting involved as Department Committee Members or stepping into leadership roles such as Committee Chairman.
Department Committees play a vital role in supporting our mission to serve veterans, their families, and our communities. Committee service offers members the opportunity to learn more about the organization, share ideas, and help guide programs across Iowa.
Making leadership part of your New Year’s resolution can be both rewarding and impactful. You don’t need prior experience—just a willingness to learn, collaborate, and serve. Mentorship and support are always available.
This year, consider saying “yes” to a new role and a new opportunity to lead within the Iowa Department of the American Legion Auxiliary.

April is here, and with the first signs of spring in bloom, everyone is eager to get outside and enjoy the season. Before things get too busy, now is a great time to pause and take a quick look at your unit’s finances.
Are your fees paid for Girls State or Junior camp? Have merit awards been discussed? Any other expenses coming up or more fundraisers needed? Taking care of these details early helps ensure a smooth and stress-free spring.
Your department finance team works hard to support the overall financial health of the department, but success depends on each unit doing its part. Staying organized and proactive makes a big difference.
Thank you for your continued effort and commitment—keep up the excellent work!
Your Finance Committee,
Regina Chock, Patti Rolf & Ann Crawford

Girls State
Happy April- The Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is approximately 2 months and 13 days from being in session for this year. We are excited to announce the attendee registration deadline has been extended to the 12th of April. Hopefully, it will mean more girls will be able to register- more units and posts can sponsor an attendee to join in this packed week at Drake University. There is a waiting list of girls that have contacted the Department Office via the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Iowa website- please reach out to me, Ann R or Crystal to help you obtain their pertinent information. Why not- do your part in benefitting a young woman? Many times, this week changes lives for the better and the attendees get so much more out of it than we know. Don’t delay- think about sponsoring, call the office or reach out to Ann or myself and join in the experience of Girls State.
The Samsung scholarship is a great opportunity for the attendee to apply for dollars, but the citizen must apply per the instructions from the American Legion Website. Ask your attendee if she is a descendant of a veteran, if the answer is yes, encourage her to apply. The result could be amazing, but we or they will never know if they don’t do the necessary paperwork. Iowa Girls State was very fortunate in 2025 to have one of the 5 finalists- it would be great if this could continue.
The needs of the Girls State program still are for the field trips’ bus, gift cards to the business, money designated for the city mayors each to have a memento, and cash. On the side of volunteers, the opportunity is there. Apply- have questions give me a call. Personal information in the bluebook.
My last thought for this bulletin is for me to stress – COMMUNICATION between you and your registered applicant. Communicate with her- as the time for Girls State gets closer apprehension of the unknown world becomes real. Keep in touch with her- first and foremost make sure she is registered then follow through with her.
Thank you for supporting this premier program of the American Legion Auxiliary. With all of us working together for the cause, Iowa Girls State can continue to grow and survive.

It’s Spring Cleaning Time!
It’s time to find your Governing Documents, dust them off, and see if they truly reflect what, when, and how you accomplish tasks in your Unit.
Are the amounts you charge for Senior and Junior dues correct? If not, fix them. Is the date, time, and place your Unit meetings are held correct? If not, fix it.
Did you know that there is a Guideline for Writing Unit Standing Rules on the Department Web page? Check it out using the link below. Go to Unit Resources and click on the Guideline link.
https://iowaala.org/forms/
After you have cleaned up your Governing Documents, sign them and send a copy to Department Headquarters for your Unit’s permanent file. If you have any questions, please contact me. My contact details are in the Blue Book.

Junior Activities
Happy April!
Just a friendly reminder there is still time to send me a report sharing what your Juniors have been up to this year. If you have pictures as well that would be great! Shoot me a quick email anytime at alyssa123sparrgrove@gmail.com
It’s hard to believe that summer is just around the corner! With that being said, Junior President Lea will be having her Department Junior Convention, June 12th at the Christian Conference Center in Newton. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM. We hope to see you there!
April is the Month of the Military Child, along with April 15th being Purple Up Day. This is a great opportunity for us to recognize and honor military children and their families, especially while involving our Juniors in the activities. You can:
~Organize a food drive with your unit to collect non-perishable items for military families in need.
~Wear purple and encouraging your unit to wear purple on April 15th. This is a simple yet meaningful way to show your support for military children and their families.
~Look for local events in your community that may be celebrating Purple up day or Military Children month. If there is nothing, it may be a good idea to plan your own event with your unit!
~Write thank you/appreciation cards to military children and their families expressing your appreciation for the sacrifices their families have made. You can do this with your unit and Juniors or on your own.
The options are endless!

I am so happy to announce Junior Camp preparation is in full swing!!! Slots are filling up with exciting speakers this year. We will be having the Ronald McDonald House come to speak. Ever wonder what they do with all those pop tabs? Well, be sure and ask your junior because they are going to find out! Next, we have the Puppy Jake Foundation speaking on behalf of our veterans and their service dogs. Dawn Aberle will be honoring our deceased veterans with a presentation on Wreaths Across America. Dawn organized the Wreaths Across America event in her hometown, plus other cemeteries in the Troy Mills area. Jasper County Conservation always makes a big hit with Archery! One of our juniors' favorite activities! Junior Camp will be having its own Programs Fair with information to share with their Unit. Plus much, much more! Welcome letters will be sent out to each junior in May. They will include the dos and don’ts, what to bring to camp, and what to leave at home. Please call if you have questions. See everyone in June!

Leadership
Strong leadership is the backbone of every organization, and ours is no exception.
While our programs and services are often the most visible part of what we do, it is the leadership behind the scenes that keeps our mission focused and responsive to the communities, veterans, and families we serve.
As you all know, our mission is service, not self. We measure success by the impact we make—the lives we improve, the needs we meet, and the hope we provide.
Great leaders turn big-picture goals into meaningful action. They help people understand not just what we do, but why it matters. They embrace diverse perspectives and recognize the contributions of everyone who gives their time and talent in support of our mission.
Now more than ever, we must show our communities, veterans, and their families that we are a strong and reliable organization—one they can count on in times of need. We are here to lend a helping hand, offer support, and be a shoulder to lean on. Simple acts of care, like checking in on one another, matter more than ever.
I ask each of you to represent our organization with pride. Make the call. Reach out to the mother whose child has just been deployed—someone who may not know where to turn or how to cope with the uncertainty.
This is our moment to lead, to rise, and most importantly, to serve. Let’s show the world that the ALA is not only committed in words, but in action—standing side by side with those who need us most.

April showers bring those May flowers, but what did our March voices bring? At the Capitol, it brought about a halt in SF 2466 temporarily. What is SF 2466, you ask? It is a senate file that the American Legion was opposed to, as it was written. In a nutshell, it was a bill that would significantly reduce funding that County Veteran Service Offices rely on to serve veterans, especially in rural counties. County VSOs are often the first and most accessible point of contact for veterans navigating the VA system. Reducing these resources does not reduce the need – it simply makes it harder for veterans to access the benefits they earned through service.
We thought that SF2466 was done, because it did not advance out of the House Veterans Affairs committee. But it was referred to Appropriations, which has kept the bill alive. Amendments to the bill are being worked on, but the American Legion is still registered against SF2466 as it stands. Our job is to contact the Appropriations Committee Members and let them know we support the American Legion and their stance against SF 2466 as it currently stands. How do I find out who the committee members are? www.legis.iowa.gov will take you to the Iowa Legislative page. At the top is a button that says “Committees and Schedules”. Click that button, and the committees for the House and Senate will be there. House appropriations committee members are the ones who need to be emailed and called. Clicking on each member will bring up a photo (below each photo states what district they are in), email info, and phone number. The rest is up to us. USE THAT VOICE Auxiliary! Let our House representatives know that we stand with the American Legion against SF2466 as currently written.

Marketing
Looking forward to our Department Convention, the marketing team will be hosting a game night. We will celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary of the Signing of the Independence by playing an America 250 Kahoot! game of trivia. We will also play some “minute to win it” games. Can’t wait to see you all, have some fun and raise some money for our ALA initiatives!
During Department Convention, we will raffle a meat bundle AND a PIT BOSS grill/smoker. Summer is coming and we want you to be ready – have you seen the prices of meat these days? The drawing will be held during closing ceremonies.
Some great news to share is that we were able to reopen the apparel store again and this time for the month of May! The family shirts will have some new options so even if you have one of the shirts, check the site for something new. An idea that has been shared is that some units make purchases as gifts/awards for their members. We hope you can share that information at your district conferences and unit meetings. The link will be shared on our Facebook pages and shared with the District Leadership in an effort to get this to all of our members. Items will be delivered in time for Department Convention.
As always, open to your ideas~

Howdy Ho Iowa!! We are currently at 88.16%. That puts us at 5th place in the Central Division. Central is at 89.91% and every division in the Nation is over 85%. Remember to renew, retain and recruit!
As the weather gets nicer, many units will be hosting events. Use this as an opportunity to gain new members. Everyone you meet is a potential member. Remember your why and share this.
While we are excited for the hard work so far, we are not done!! Grab a friend, a neighbor or a relative and take them to the next event.
We are proud of your hard work and dedication!!

Military families already face significant challenges and uncertainty, but receiving pay should never be one of them. Currently, Coast Guard families are dealing with missed paychecks, which impacts every aspect of their daily lives—from housing and groceries to overall stability. National National Security Chair, Norma Tramm asks us to contact our Senators and Representatives to demand immediate action so Coast Guard service members are paid what they’ve earned. Our military families sacrifice so much to support the mission. The least our nation can do is ensure that those who serve are paid on time, every time. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), whose mission is “Fulfilling Our Nation’s Promise,” works to account for U.S. service members missing from past conflicts. Using historical research, modern forensic science, and advanced DNA technology, DPAA identifies remains—many previously labeled as “Unknown”—and returns them home to their families. In 2024 alone, 172 fallen service members from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam were identified, giving their families long-awaited closure and proper military burials. A major milestone in this effort came from the 2018 return of 55 boxes of remains from North Korea, representing an estimated 250 individuals, including Army Maj. Harvey Storms, identified in 2019. I hope this newsletter finds a large number of students in your schools making their Poppy posters. For those districts that have had their Spring conferences and sent the winners with the Department guests, I will get them from the Department. I can also arrange to get them if not ready by your conference.
Units should have received their Poppy orders. Several ways to promote the Poppy are: community proclamation of National Poppy Day; press releases giving the history of the Poppy and when units will be distributing them; use of social media, such as a Facebook page for the unit, county, and district; and banners or posters to hang on community calendar boards. All these ideas can be found on poppydayusa.org.
Please send me your unit's ideas on distributing Poppy’s. Orange City Unit 329 is purchasing the Poppy Coloring Books to distribute in the elementary grades, giving the history and the meaning behind the Poppy. These coloring books can be purchased online from the emblem.legion.org/catalog.

The committee has split up the districts among our committee to reach out to any organizations who are not fully compliant with the IRS. We are sharing these reports at as many district conferences as we are able to attend. I’d like to emphasize the importance of the tax return that you are hearing about…
If your unit has fallen out of good status with the IRS, currently, the unit has two options:
Option 1: Remain a taxable entity (Being tax exempt is not a requirement to remain an entity of the ALA) If an organization’s tax-exempt status is automatically revoked, it is no longer exempt from federal income tax. Consequently, it may be required to file one of the following federal income tax returns and pay applicable income taxes:
• Form 1120, U.S. Corporation Income Tax Return, due by the 15th day of the 3rd month after the end of the organization’s tax year
• Form 1041, U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts, due by the 15th day of the 4th month after the end of your organization’s tax year
Option 2: Reinstating Tax-Exempt Status – This is what would be needed in order to qualify for future ALA Foundation grants.
The law prohibits the IRS from undoing a proper automatic revocation and does not provide for an appeal process. An automatically revoked organization must apply to have its status reinstated, even if the organization was not originally required to file an application for exemption.
To apply for reinstatement, you will want to follow the instructions provided in the IRS revenue procedures 2014-11. Because it has been longer than 15 months since the revocation, the unit will want to look at the Retroactive Reinstatement Procedure after 15 months.
The reinstatement process will include completing Form 1024. The IRS has now moved to an entirely electronic version of completing their form 1024 and paying the applicable fees, which is currently set at $600. I have the IRS’s instructions for that form as well as our recommended supplemental instructions that are specific to ALA Units (and districts). It is recommended that you prepare your answers for Form 1024 prior to completing the online official form. Once reinstated, the unit would file the appropriate 990 series (990N, 990EZ, 990) annually based on their revenue threshold.
Let us know how we can help you!

Service to Veterans volunteers are American Legion Auxiliary members who provide service to veterans outside a VAMC.
We look for ways to help military families get on their feet, during and after deployment, in hopes of easing their burdens.
We honor our veterans by demonstrating and passing on respect for our country and our Nation's flag.
We support patriotic youth programs, education programs, contests, and scholarships in local school systems.
We volunteer at stand downs, coordinate send-offs, and welcome home events. We work in our communities, demonstrating the love and compassion we have for those veterans who served, and are still serving our country.
American Legion Auxiliary volunteers do important work, and our hours count! Please get them entered on your Unit End of the Year reports. Units send your reports to your County Presidents.
