Artist Statement by Susan Point for Ancestral Territory
This serigraph depicts the radical change that is continually occurring within the unceded territory of the UBC area. In this design, a traditional longhouse is incorporated into the structures of condominiums/apartment developments, which were once our ancestral territory.
The traditional ancestral territory is an area that a First Nation identifies the land our ancestors inhabited and stewarded since time immemorial. This concept is not just important, it's crucial to appreciating the depth of our connection to the land and the significance of our traditional practices.
Unceded means that First Nations families never ceded or legally surrendered their lands to the Crown or Canada.
