Chocolate and socks and magnetic love, oh my!

Valentine’s Day is on its way, and we’re ready to help you spread the love. Just in… delicious crunchy chocolate from Ma’s kitchen. You don’t want to miss them :) In addition to a fantastic collection of beautiful cards, we carry red angels, red stars from Bibelot in Niagara on the Lake, red cardinals, red bird feeders, windchimes, magnets with “Love” and “Love you to the moon,” and our ever-popular (& cozy) Solmate socks.

Do you love that squirrels love suet?

Maybe. But probably not. We often mention our squirrel-proof bird feeders, but did you know there’s such a thing as squirrel-proof suet feeders, as well? We have three options in the store: A cage designed to put two suet cakes inside. Keeps squirrels out, but bigger birds don’t fit inside. A cage that goes around a feeder up to 16” long. Hairy Woodpeckers fit but not Blue Jays. Cardinals are too shy to go in.  The new Squirrel Buster suet feeder holds two suet cakes and has a tail prop for woodpeckers. As with all Squirrel Buster products, this one is guaranteed for life. And, we throw in two free suet cakes when you purchase one!

More birds at the feeders… The first reports of Pine Siskins are coming in, and the American Goldfinches are starting to show some more yellow. We’re also seeing more Northern Cardinals arriving at the feeder. These bright red beauties are starting to bring some love into the air with their loud, rich, “pretty, pretty, pretty” song :) All of these feeder delights need high-quality food, especially as the average temperatures drop in February.

Making a life is more than just making a living

I left a job with Peterborough GreenUP almost 20 years ago to help start the Avant-Garden Shop with my then business partners. My primary focus (and worry) at that time was, of course, on whether or not I could actually make this new venture work.  That fact that the store is now in its 18 th year is testament that my husband, Clayton, and I have. Although retail rarely makes one rich, we’re making a living and loving what we do. It’s truly important to us that we support Canadian artists and offer unique and high-quality products.
