Everyone deserves a place to call home.

Celebrating in New Hampshire

Grand openings are among my favorite milestones here at Avesta. We invite residents, partners, staff, and neighbors to join us on-site in an exciting culmination of the many years of planning and implementation that led to the creation of new affordable homes. It brings me great joy to hear from residents who have found a safe, quality place to live in their community. I also appreciate the opportunity to thank our many partners and staff who help make our work a reality.

On Sept. 17, Avesta Housing will host a grand opening celebration of River Turn Apartments in Conway, N.H. Providing 40 new apartments for individuals and families, River Turn is the first of up to four planned buildings that will bring a total of more than 150 homes to the Mount Washington Valley region, and is further testament to Avesta’s commitment to provide safe, quality, affordable homes to the state.

Avesta has a long history of helping provide affordable housing in New Hampshire dating to the early 1980s, when we served as a consultant to other organizations. In 2015, we opened One Meeting Place in Exeter, the first property we fully developed, owned, and managed in the state. In fact, One Meeting Place’s grand opening was the very first grand opening I attended at Avesta, and I can remember how impactful the experience was for me! Now, with the addition of River Turn, we have nine properties with a combined total of more than 300 affordable homes in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire needs 60,000 housing units by 2030 to meet the needs of its residents. Avesta is working with partners around the state to help address this challenge. We will continue to build on our 40-year history of working in the state and our strong relationships with key partners to help ensure that everyone in the Granite State has a safe, quality, affordable place to call home.

I invite you to join us on Sept. 17 as we celebrate the River Turn community and our ongoing commitment to the creation of affordable housing in New Hampshire.

River Turn: A creative and effective approach to affordable housing

Like many municipalities in Northern New England, Conway, N.H., has a growing need for more affordable housing but short supply. Avesta is working alongside state and federal legislators, state agencies, town officials, and other community leaders to address current and future housing needs in the area. River Turn in Conway is a direct result of those partnerships.

River Turn provides quality affordable housing for people of all ages, including older adults, families with children, and people with disabilities. The three-story building is Passive House certified to maximize energy efficiency and resident comfort while reducing our carbon footprint.

River Turn gives Granite State residents a place to call home

'River Turn has really helped me get back on track'

Tania is a former nurse’s aide and medical office worker who lost her job in 2016 when she began to exhibit signs of multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare progressive neurological disorder. Homeless for nine months, she eventually found an apartment that accepted Section 8 vouchers. But it was not handicapped accessible, and when her disease progressed to the point where she needed a wheelchair, she had to look for a new home.

She found it at River Turn. Tania now has a one-bedroom apartment with a handicapped-accessible bathroom. When the weather is nice, she likes to go to the property’s community garden to read or write in her notebook. “It’s so wonderful to live in a new, affordable, clean place,” Tania said. “Living at River Turn has really helped me get back on track.”

'This place saved my sanity'

Erin is a widow who had to sell her home of almost 20 years in Canaan, N.H., when complications from diabetes required that her leg be amputated above the knee and taking care of a house by herself proved too great a challenge. But when she tried to find a handicapped-accessible apartment to rent, she found that most of them were either beyond her price range or had waitlists that were as long as seven years. “We applied everywhere — and I mean everywhere — with no luck,” she said.

Then her daughter-in-law read that Avesta was building River Turn in Conway. Erin moved into her new home in December. Now she can concentrate on improving her physical health without worrying day to day whether she will have a place to live. “This place saved my sanity,” she said. “It just kind of brightens the day, you know, to look at how nice it is and how clean it is. It’s incredible.”
