Avesta advocates for affordable housing solutions

Affordable housing cannot happen without government support. As such, Avesta advocates for policies, legislation, and funding that support affordable housing at the municipal, state, and federal levels.

On April 4, Avesta Housing Director of Real Estate Development Patrick Hess participated in a panel discussion in Portland hosted by the Council of State Governments East focusing on housing solutions for rural communities. The panel was part of a policy summit addressing challenges facing rural areas, and the audience consisted primarily of state legislators from throughout New England.

On April 15, Nicole DiGeronimo, director of Avesta's Homeownership + Financial Counseling department, presented testimony before the Maine Legislature supporting LD 1167, a bill that would create a pilot program providing grants to nonprofit housing developers for the rehabilitation of Maine’s aging housing stock for first-time home buyers. This program would directly benefit Avesta programs already in place, including “A Path Forward: Homeownership for ME,” in which we purchase and rehabilitate homes that are then sold at affordable prices in perpetuity to middle-income wage earners.

Celebrating 20 years of housing for chronically homeless

We recently joined our partner Preble Street to celebrate the 20th and 15th anniversaries of Logan Place and Florence House, respectively. Residents of both properties enjoyed food and games, and residents of Florence House received a special treat – a visit from the property's namesake, Florence Young, a licensed clinical social worker and former director of social work at Preble Street who later served on its Board of Directors.

Logan Place, which opened in 2005, was the first property in Maine to offer both permanent housing and site-based support services for chronically homeless people. It was followed by Florence House in 2010 and Huston Commons in 2015, and we are in the predevelopment stage of a fourth property for chronically homeless people near downtown Portland.

Construction underway on Seavey Crossing

We have begun construction on Seavey Crossing, our new affordable housing development in Westbrook, Maine.

When completed, Seavey Crossing will include 61 safe, quality, affordable homes for people ages 55 and older and will feature amenities including on-site parking and laundry and a community room with kitchen appliances and an electric fireplace sitting area.
