RENT BOARD GIVES UP ON NEW FINES

As always, we attended the Pasadena Rental Housing Board meeting for you on October 1^st. After a prior round of discussion in June, the Rent Board yet again looked at ways to invent new landlord offenses - and fines to go with them.

We have been making the case that this is extreme overreach, and even the Rent Board's own attorneys told them that the Petris Act (Civil Code §§1947.7, 1947.8) does not allow additional penalties on landlords who make a good faith effort to follow complex rental regulations.

As reported in Pasadena Now, the Board has finally dropped its attempt to make up new ways to fine landlords.

There are still many ways to get caught out by Measure H's unfair "Gotchas", such as failing to display the right forms.

We recommend that you publish the "Notice of the Existence of Measure H" in a conspicuous location on your property. You need to have this visible to tenants, and many of our members have bought lockable noticeboards like this one, to ensure that business licenses and other required forms are on display.

We're still working to fix Measure H's unnecessary complexity and bring in a fair and balanced Rent Board.
