A Letter to the Congregation from Christian Nurture

Avondale Members,

So many in our congregation have commented on how excited they are to see all the little faces in our weekly Children’s Moment during Worship. We couldn’t agree more! And we recognize that this brings an abundance of new faces to our morning Nursery and Sunday School Classes.

This provides context for the notice you may have seen about Avondale looking to hire a new Nursery Coordinator. This is simply a second paid position to take care of all our little ones, in addition to the reliable services continuing to be provided by Bonnie Howard. This second position has been in the budget for years and was filled prior to Covid. As our numbers have returned to pre-Covid levels and as we have welcomed new families, the number of children in our nursery has risen, requiring us to fill this paid position again.

While we aim to fill this second position (and likely afterward on an as-needed basis), we are also looking to resume a rotation/schedule of member volunteers to support the paid staff and provide additional love and nurture to our little ones in the Nursery which is for children ages 0-3 y/o. We look forward to having more hands available to hold the littlest ones and free up the paid staff to interact more with the older toddlers, including story-time for spiritual education.

We hope you will consider nurturing and caring for some of the youngest in our congregation. A Sign-Up Genius has been created and a sign-up sheet will be on the table that contains the Children's Worship Materials in the FLC during worship. Once you have signed up, reach out to Jessica Shanks in the office to complete the online Child Protection Training. Additionally, please consider passing along the Nursery Coordinator Job Description to interested parties.

We thank God for all the little children and all the efforts of our adults to love and nurture them! Thank you for your participation in making this happen.

Pentecost Offering

The ACC scholarship program was created in 2021 to better support childcare accessibility to families in the community, and named in honor of Max Shanks in 2022. It currently supports full tuition for 2 children at the center. Donations to the Max Shanks Scholarship will be used to support the current children that attend the Avondale Children's Center through our scholarship program with the hope of increasing the scholarships we have available at the ACC. Through the fund, we have been able to provide children within the scholarship program with support in participating in extracurricular activities, including a dance camp this summer for one student. The funds will also provide these children and their families with necessities for school and home when needed.

We are excited to share this wonderful news with you as a part of the Pentecost Offering. The Pentecost Offering is received by the PCUSA. Forty percent of the offering is to be retained by individual congregations for the purpose of impacting the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used to support children-at-risk, youth, and young adults through ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency. Psalm 71 testifies that a foundation of faith established during childhood helps ensure lifelong faith and service. The patterns and lessons established during these formative years continue to bear fruit throughout a person's life. Your gift to the Pentecost offering helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. Thank you for your support. It is our hope and prayer that the Max Shanks Scholarship Fund continue to grow, impacting the lives of many children in our community for years to come.
