Baptism of the Lord
Mark 1: 4 - 11

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

How many different ways can you use water?
Water can be used for drinking, splashing, swimming, fishing, bathing and many other things! Without water we would miss out on all kinds of fun. Without water we probably wouldn't smell very good either. Without water we would not be able to live.

Jesus is Baptized
In our scripture today, we learn that Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan River. The story of Jesus being baptized teaches us who He is and the importance of baptism. When Jesus was baptized, the bible tells us that God's spirit came down from Heaven in the shape of a Dove to live in Jesus and that He told Jesus, for all to hear, "You are my child. I love you very much. You make me happy!"

Your Baptism
You may or may not have been baptized yet or even remember your Baptism but it was a special time of having ordinary water, that had been prayed over and blessed, washed over you while family and friends watched with love and excitement. It was a time of recognizing God's spirit in you and that you too are loved, a child of God and that He is well pleased with you!

Have you been baptized? Do you remember your baptism?

Dear God, Thank you for water and all of the ways we can use it! Help me to remember when I am playing, bathing or drinking water that I am Your child and that You are happy with me! Amen.

Mission Corner
Lunches for Homeless Neighbors continues this winter!

Our few Lunches for Homeless Neighbors events were a great success--it was so good to see each other, and to provide some much-needed help for the 70 working men at the Roof Above dorm. Each time, the men were so appreciative of our efforts. We still have room for additional volunteers on January 26 and February 23. Please take a look and sign up! You now have the opportunity to serve as a "Lunch Leader," which simply requires getting the groceries (Mission team will reimburse), leading the assembly, and taking the lunches over to the dorm in the Elizabeth neighborhood. This season, when Room in the Inn will unfortunately not be at Avondale, let's continue to join together and help our homeless neighbors!
