"Pieces"
Mark 1: 29 - 39

29 After leaving the synagogue, Jesus, James, and John went home with Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed, sick with a fever, and they told Jesus about her at once. 31 He went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she served them. 32 That evening, at sunset, people brought to Jesus those who were sick or demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered near the door. 34 He healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases, and he threw out many demons. But he didn’t let the demons speak, because they recognized him. 35 Early in the morning, well before sunrise, Jesus rose and went to a deserted place where he could be alone in prayer. 36 Simon and those with him tracked him down. 37 When they found him, they told him, “Everyone’s looking for you!” 38 He replied, “Let’s head in the other direction, to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there too. That’s why I’ve come.” 39 He traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and throwing out demons.

Children's Moment
Parents, read over the lesson below and use it to stir conversation as a family!

Our phones these days help us in many ways. They help us to stay in touch with family and friends. They help us in times of an emergency when we need police, fire or medic. They have maps that help us get places safely. However, our phones can only help us so much before they need to be plugged in and recharged.
In our scripture today we learn that Jesus, after helping many people, needed to take a break and recharge before heading out to help more people.
"Early in the morning, well before sunrise, Jesus rose and went to a deserted place where he could be alone in prayer."

Where did Jesus go? What did he do?
Jesus spent time alone, talking with God. I would imagine He was talking about all he had seen and was asking God to be near and give him strength and rest in order to continue. Jesus did this throughout all of his work. Spending time with God was His way of finding rest. To follow Jesus we must have faith and believe that Jesus is with us and using us to spread His love to others. Helping and loving others is what we are supposed to do and it feels really good to help another person. However, sometimes you have to stop and take some time to care for yourself as well!

God wants you to come to Him when you are tired, weary and in need of rest. He wants to listen to what is on your heart and He wants to guide you and give you strength.

Prayer
Dear God, Thank you for always being with me. Help me to remember to stop, take the time to talk with you and find rest. Amen.

"I thank God for using me as a teacher to guide, prepare and encourage each child academically, mentally and spiritually!" -Sydni Duncan
In partnership with the Alliance Center for Education (ACE), Avondale continues to be a site for remote learning for school age children. Every Tuesday through Thursday, we welcome 15 elementary through highshoolers, and two ACE staff members, Mr. Higgins and Ms. Duncan. The church financially supports the hot meals and snacks provided to the students each week. Avondalers also joyfully support the annual Christmas Angel Tree project and volunteers lead Bible studies and other activities for the students.

We welcome Ms. Sydni Duncan to Avondale as a new teacher for the ACE program. She is currently a student at UNCC, majoring in Child and Family Development and Psychology.
