"Turning Point"
Mark 9: 2 - 9

2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

Read today's scripture, listed above from Mark 9: 2-9

Our scripture today is known as the transfiguration story. Transfiguration means the people involved in the event were changed by it. In this story of the Transfiguration, we begin to see the truth that Jesus will die on the cross for God’s glory to be fulfilled. We are reminded that Jesus knew what was ahead of him and needed to be brave. His friends wanted to stay on the mountain top, where everything was wonderful, but Jesus said no—there were things they still needed to do. He brought his friends along so he could teach them about what was going to happen and how to be brave as they went with Jesus on the rest of his journey.

What does it mean to be brave? Can you talk about a time you remember being brave?

Jesus was brave and he wants us to be brave! Change can be really hard but really, we are all changing everyday! With each new thing we learn and person we meet, Jesus is nurturing us so that one day we can step out with courage and bravery to use our gifts to love others just as He did!

Prayer
Dear God, Thank you for being with us! Help us to be brave and to listen to Jesus. Amen.

Activity
Super heroes have special gifts and use them to serve and protect the world! It takes bravery to do what they do and stand up for what is right! Who is your favorite super hero? If you were a super hero, what would your special power be? How would you use it to show your bravery?

Use an old t-shirt, towel or sheet and design your own super hero cape! Get messy with paint or tie-dye and share your cape with Avondale on social media!
