5 Pittsburgh Black-Owned Businesses in the Fashion Industry
Idia’Dega is a global design collaboration that focuses on sustainability and eco-design. This collective, founded by local Pittsburgher Tereneh Idia, works with women artisans from across the globe, including Maasai, Oneida, and African-American women. The pieces from Idia’Dega utilize Indigenous elements, like traditional textile arts and beading, to design clothes that are both beautiful and sustainable.
Founded by Nisha Blackwell in 2014, Knotzland reuses textile waste to create fashionable and unique bow ties. They’ve also recently started making face masks to keep Pittsburgh safe and stylish. Not only that, but they work with women in the community to teach sewing classes to pass on the knowledge of sustainability and expanding the life of clothing that has already been produced. Blackwell knows the importance of knowing this skill, being a self-taught seamstress herself.
If you’re looking for a quality headband, head wrap, or turban, look no further than Lavish Lamb. Angel Ford founded the business in 2018 to provide the Pittsburgh area with a source for hair accessories with a focus on style as well as function. Although the business began out of the East End Cooperative Ministries, Ford has now been able to expand her business online to be able to provide fashionable accessories to people across the country.
David King has owned Oakland Fashion Optical for over 30 years. He works to provide quality eyewear, including frames and contact lenses, to Pittsburgh residents as well as residents from around the world. King is a licensed optometrist whose experience and prestige has earned Oakland Fashion Optical a loyal following and a valued reputation.
Formerly known as CC Xpressions, Clarissa + Clirsa Boutique is an online boutique based in Pittsburgh. The boutique is owned by Monica McCallister and Roshayn Gardner, who want to provide unique jewelry, extensions, purses, and other accessories to help set you apart from the rest. The duo is passionate about helping women to find pieces that allow them to find their true personal style and express themselves.

IFundWomen of Color Surprises 100 BIPOC With Resources
Amex has teamed up with IFundWomen of Color to launch the “100 for 100” program, which will surprise 100 Black, female entrepreneurs and innovators with $25,000 in funding each and 100 days of resources. The resources will include business education, mentoring, marketing and virtual networking. The lucky 100 will be announced later this fall.
According to the 2019 American Express State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, Black-women-owned businesses were growing at unprecedented rates prior to the pandemic yet still making less than their counterparts. Firms started by Black women received only .0006% of VC funding by startups between 2009 and 2017.
Today is also the “Business Class LIVE: Summit for Success” event, which is designed to support the small business community at large, and also the specific needs of minority-owned business owners. The Summit is typically held in-person, but this year American Express has built a fully immersive, proprietary Amex Virtual Campus to host the day-long experience for thousands of small businesses. The Summit aims to address small business owners with networking, resources, and tools to get them through challenging times. The summit is free of cost to attendees.

MoroccanOil Launches Program To Teach Stylists Virtually
Like most companies, the team at MoroccanOil had to rethink the way they do things due to the pandemic. In mid-October, MoroccanOil Professionals Online Education, a comprehensive program providing education to stylists virtually was launched.
Annual memberships will be $99.99 per year or $14.99 a month, with a rolling catalog of online classes. Other benefits include two new artistry classes per month—with step-by-step technique breakdowns—and one new business class per month, with efficient ways to increase revenue included. There’ll also be discounts on Academy tickets and livestream summits, a digital workbook, and perhaps the best part—a stylist giftbag featuring essential MoroccanOil haircare and styling products valued at more than $200 with the annual membership!
The classes will be led by industry pros such as Kevin Hughes and Antonio Corral Calero, who will teach everything from how to do textured bobs to split-level cuts, merchandising, and more.
“The stylist community has been a key contributor to the success of MoroccanOil from the very beginning. During this time, when attending in-person MoroccanOil Academy workshops is more difficult, this online forum allows us to further our commitment to the stylist community by providing them with new forms of elevated education,” says MoroccanOil co-founder Carmen Tal. “We are proud to launch this additional platform and expand the reach of MoroccanOil Education continuing to inspire the next generation of professional stylists.”

Chet Vincent Focuses On Recording With Band Biirdwatcher Amidst Pandemic
Straight out of Pittsburgh, Chet Vincent is a rising performer who plays with the folk-rock band Biirdwatcher, as well as with his wife, country singer Molly Alphabet.
Starting at a young age, Vincent recalls always being in love with music and writing his own songs. Having described it as a “compulsion”, Vincent lives to watch his music come to life from the page. This is especially important to him when performing with Molly Alphabet. Since they have begun performing together, they have completed two recording projects including a full-length album released last year titled “Broken Record.” Vincent explains that this record would not be possible without the inspiration he has received from performing with local Pittsburgh musicians over the years.
The creative flow was coming to the pair at light speed until the COVID-19 pandemic stopped them from performing and touring with other local artists. Instead of the live performances, Vincent has been able to focus on himself and completing recording projects from home. This has been particularly helpful toward him and his band, Biirdwatcher as they work on completing a new album of original music.

Nashville Fashion Week Complements 10th Anniversary With 'We Are Nashville Fashion' Campaign
When most people think about Nashville, they are reminded of the bustling city life surrounded by The Grand Ole Opry, country music, and Johnny Cash’s everlasting legacy. What some decline to recognize is the city’s 10th year celebrating Nashville Fashion Week.
Founder and managing partner of Nashville Fashion Week, Marcia Masulla, describes the event as a “city-wide celebration of Nashville’s thriving fashion and retail community and its vast array of creative talent and continues to gain momentum year after year. Featuring local, regional and national designers and industry professionals in an array of creative events throughout the city encourages both Nashvillians and visitors to explore the city’s diverse fashion and retail spaces with promotions, partnerships and educational workshops.” In order to adapt to the COVID - 19 regulations, Masulla and other partners decided to take the event online.
“We launched the 'We Are Nashville Fashion' campaign to commemorate our 10th anniversary this year to make the point that our fashion week isn't just about the glam, designers, models or events. It's about the people who work within the industry and who contribute so much to this boot-strapped effort. From the florist, production team, caterer and hair and makeup teams to the music director, administrative crew, sponsors and more, it takes a community.”
