RETURN OF THE SAFETY AWARDS

Nominations Open Now

Each year, we celebrate the member companies and individuals doing excellent work to promote safety in construction and build positive safety culture in Saskatchewan.

Nominations are open until September 6 for awards in three categories: Corporate Leadership in Safety, Safety Leader and Safety Practitioner. You can self-nominate, recognize a coworker or your company.

We sat down with 2023 winners Ram Steel, Dustin Brears and Kevin Lavoie last fall to find out what the award meant for them, how they reinforce safety culture with their teams and why an ongoing commitment to safety is so important in their work.

EXTREME WEATHER

Tips from the Tornado Hunter

Greg Johnson spoke at our AGM earlier this year to provide a memorable take on safety. Dedicated to storm photography for the last 15 years, he has seen over 200 tornadoes and never takes safety lightly. He also works closely with news outlets and emergency responders to ensure others stay safe when storms hit.

Acknowledging that "construction season is tornado season," he shared keys to returning home safely, no matter the job:

  1. Prioritize safety because it’s the right thing to do – not just because it’s legislated.
  2. Training and education – daily safety briefings, a well-developed safety program, hazard assessments, proper equipment, vehicle safety and situational awareness are vital.
  3. Know your risks – summer storms, high winds, rain, hail and other extreme weather can rapidly change working conditions. Watch weather alerts and radar to stay aware.
  4. Have an emergency plan, review it and practice the implementation so everyone knows what to do on a moment’s notice.
  5. Build positive culture where it’s the expectation that everyone goes home safely.
