Stephen Morris Receives Award from US/ICOMOS

Congratulations to former Chief Stephen Morris of the National Park Service Office of International Affairs on his receiving the United States National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (US/ICOMOS) Award for Advancing International Understanding and Friendship. This award is given to “an individual, group or institution, in the public or private sector, for extraordinary and sustained achievement in pursuing our mission to promote the conservation of the world’s cultural and natural heritage and stronger connections to the global heritage community.” Morris received the honor at the 14th Annual Gala Celebration of World Heritage held November 22, 2024 in the Anderson House in Washington, D.C.

Sites in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Added to the World Heritage List

Congratulations also to the Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which received inscription on the World Heritage List at the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in New Delhi in July 2024. Part of the transnational Moravian Church Settlements Serial Nomination that added three eighteenth century communities in Herrnhut, Germany; Gracehill in Northern Ireland, Great Britain; and in Bethlehem, United States; as an extension to the originally inscribed Christiansfeld Moravian Church Settlement in Denmark. In each of these component parts there remains an active settlement with the communities reflecting the ideals of the Moravian Church. The inscription of Bethlehem's Moravian Church served as the focus of the Annual Gala Celebration of World Heritage sponsored by US/ICOMOS in Washington on November 22.

Sixteenth Street Baptist Church Wins Stewardship Award from NTHP

And last but not least, Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, was the 2024 recipient of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Trustees's Emeritus Award for Site Stewardship Award. One of ten national awards given annually, this 64-year-old program highlights distinguished individuals, nonprofits, public agencies and corporations that give new meaning to their communities through skillful and determined preservation work. The awards were announced on October 28th at the beginning of the National Trust's annual PastForward Conference in New Orleans. Sixteenth Street Baptist Church is to be commended for its years of stewardship, not only properly approaching historic preservation of its heritage site but also on its success in attracting grant funding to support this necessary work. Congratulations!
